Morrison-Beedy to lead GOHi outreach and community engagement

A decade-long career turning research into practice has led Dianne Morrison-Beedy to her newest role at Ohio State: director of outreach and community engagement for GOHi. With Ohio State since 2018, Morrison-Beedy is the chief talent and global strategy officer and Centennial Professor of Nursing in the College of Nursing where she works to improve students’ education and expand faculty research and partnerships around the world. In addition to these responsibilities, she will work to grow GOHi’s connections throughout the university and across the globe.

GOHi staff spotlight: Feyissa Regassa

Feyissa Regassa serves as an infection prevention and control (IPC) officer at GOHi as part of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) project where he focuses on combating AMR by leading IPC initiatives and developing and implementing policies and procedures to reduce infections. At GOHi, he continues to build on his extensive experience, driving efforts to strengthen healthcare systems and mitigate the impact of AMR.

GOHi supports new lab through IHR/CARES project

GOHi continues to advance healthcare in Ethiopia through IHR/CARES in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Briana Lozano, deputy director of the Division of Global Health Protection at the U.S. CDC in Ethiopia, and her team recently visited the Arba-Minch Regional Laboratory and SARI/ILI sites as part of this project.

Sensitizing the scientific community on AMR

GOHi has played a key role in alleviating the impacts of AMR in Ethiopia by implementing the U.S. CDC Global Action in Healthcare Network - Antimicrobial Resistance (GAIHN-AR) module. GAIHN-AR is a global network of healthcare facilities, laboratories and IPC teams dedicated to protecting patients and healthcare workers from critical or emerging AMR threats by working at the forefront of laboratory detection, communication and IPC action within healthcare settings.

U.S. CDC and GOHi enhances malaria diagnostics capacity in Ethiopia

Malaria continues to be a significant public health challenge throughout Ethiopia. According to the Regional Public Health Institute, about 1.5 million malaria cases were reported from July 2023 to June 2024. Despite the various efforts to combat the disease, the July 2024 malaria morbidity and mortality report shows that the region remains heavily burdened. To address this issue, GOHi, with the support of the U.S. CDC IHR/CARES project, supplied the Amhara Public Health Institute with necessary malaria microscopy consumables, including microscopic slides, blood collection lancets and Giemsa Stain reagents.

GOHi facilitates training on risk communication in humanitarian settings

The recent rainy season in Ethiopia triggered multiple landslides, leading to the loss of lives and the evacuation of many people from various regions. In partnership with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and the U.S. CDC, GOHi organized a Training of Trainers in Arba Minch, Ethiopia. The training focused on risk communication and community engagement for 17 healthcare professionals and media experts supporting the affected communities.
