NIH Fogarty One Health Eastern Africa Research Training Program fellows

Through its 7th year and third cycle of fellowship selection, GOHi recently accepted five sandwich PhD visiting scholars fromEthiopia, Kenya and Tanzania that were placed at three different Ohio State colleges including Medicine, Public Health and Veterinary Medicine. The fellows will conduct one-year of mentored research at Ohio State before returning to their home institutions at the University of Nairobi, Kenya Medical Research Institute, University of Gondar, Addis Ababa University and Ethiopian Public Health Institute. The fellowship is made possible through the NIH Fogarty International Center, Global Infectious Diseases D43 program. GOHi thanks Ohio State faculty and staff, Michael Bisesi, PhD, Jiyoung Lee, PhD, Shu-Hua Wang, MD, and Thomas Wittum, MS, PhD, who serve as the lead advisors.

Project Details

Evaluation of bovine tuberculosis in deer population in Michigan

Shu-Hua Wang, MD, professor at Ohio States College of Medicine, hosted visiting scholars Eleine Anzai, PhD student from University of São Paulo, Brazil, and Agumas Tiruye, PhD student from University of Gondar, Ethiopia. The team visited Michigans Department of Natural Resources in December to evaluate bovine tuberculosis in deer population. GOHi has been collaborating with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in evaluation of rapid diagnostic tests for bovine TB in cattle and testing its implementation in Michigan, Brazil, China and Ethiopia. The goal is to control Bovine Tuberculosis globally and prevent its spill-over to the state of Ohio while building capacity through GOHis local, regional and international impact.

Eastern Africa regional team retreat

GOHi Eastern Africa Regional Team held a staff training and retreat from January 16-18 to reflect on the progress of projects and activities in the region with presentations from the WHIP3 TB Clinical Trial and CDC-Global Health Security projects. The two-day deliberations engaged the staff in exercises for promoting teamwork, jointly addressing challenges, reviewing lessons learned and planning for continued success.

University of Global Health Equity

A newly established regional institution, the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda inaugurated its opening with a major conference focusing on climate change, child health and global health equity. The conference included three keynote speakers, including Wondwossen Gebreyes, Ohio State GOHi executive director, whose keynote focused on the expanded role of veterinary medicine in addressing critical global priorities including pandemic preparedness, biodefense and biosecurity and the critical need of multi-disciplinary capacity building.

GOHi External Advisory Board member spotlight

Melanie Newport, MBBS, PhD, FRCP, is a professor of infectious disease and global health at Brighton and Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex. There, she has led the strategic development of global health, establishing a research program which takes a multidisciplinary approach to tackle conditions that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities living in low-income countries.

Gebreyes presents on integrating multilateral scientific mobility with research

Wondwossen Gebreyes, DVM, PhD, chaired a panel at the Association of International Education Administrators annual conference on the topic of integrating multilateral scientific mobility with research. Gebreyes and co-panelists from the Institute of International Education and West Virginia University discussed the benefits of the grants awarded by the U.S. State Departments Global Innovation Initiative. The panel highlighted the U.S.-U.K.-Brazil partnership - a grant awardee - as the model on strengthening One Health research capacity in Brazil. In addition, Gebreyes presented a TED Talk style call to action on the need for expanding digital and electronic capacity building as part of global universities internationalization strategy in order to meet the global challenges of increasing population and higher learning demands among universities.

Robert Onsare and Eyasu Tigabu join GOHi as liaison officers

GOHi welcomes two new team members. Robert S. Onsare, MSc, PhD, is an expert on antimicrobial resistance and molecular epidemiology and will serve as the GOHi Kenya liaison and post-doctoral fellow co-leading research and implementation capacity in Kenya and the region. He will also actively be involved in post-graduate co-mentorship and supervision. Eyasu Tigabu, MSc, PhD, a former GOHi PhD fellow also joined as a GOHi post-doctoral fellow and liaison to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute. His research focus area is in foodborne pathogens epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance. He will also serve as a co-mentor for NIH Fogarty PhD fellows.

GOHi monthly webinar series

"Antimicrobial resistance surveillance implementation in Ethiopia: Current successes and challenges" will be presented on Thursday, February 21, 9-10 a.m. EST and 4-5 p.m. Eastern Africa Time by Professor Eyasu Tigabu Seyoum, PhD, acting director of Bacterial, Parasitic and Zoonotic Disease Research Directorate, Ethiopian Public Health Institute Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All are welcome to attend in person at A100H Sisson Hall (1920 Coffey Road, Columbus, Ohio) or join remotely through Zoom online.
