Helping Community Animal Health Workers enhance skills with dedicated training guidelines

Community Animal Health Workers (CAHW) are key members of the global workforce, trained to provide basic animal health services in rural and underserved areas that may be resource thin when it comes to availability of veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals. However, the challenge for CAHWs has been insufficient dedicated training, the training and regulation that exists is not harmonized within and between countries, absence of agreed-upon curriculum, coordination between stakeholders, and a lack of common nomenclature leading to inconsistent performance.

The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine faculty and trainees recently provided technical assistance to the World Organisation for Animal Health in the development of CAHW guidelines, participated in ad hoc group meetings, providing insights and best practices in curriculum design and assessment.

Global Gateway grant supports College of Nursing partnership

Four faculty from the College of Nursing embarked on an education and research project that was 17 months in the making and 7,693 miles across the Pacific Ocean in Taiwan. The purpose was to begin an impactful partnership with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU)(opens in new window) that would refine its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree and launch a Collaborative Online Learning (COIL) global exchange for students from both universities.

The project was led by Dianne Morrison-Beedy, chief global strategy officer, Cindy Zellefrow, assistant clinical professor, Randee Masciola, director of DNP and Stephen McGhee, assistant dean of international education initiatives, and funded in part by grants awarded to Morrison-Beedy and Masciola through the Global Gateways and the Office of Global Innovations, respectively.

Dzhuraeva named GOHi assistant director for strategic operations

Nargis Dzhuraeva, MD, MPH, has joined the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) as assistant director for strategic operations. Dzhuraeva has previously worked with the Diabetes and Metabolism Research Center at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where she supported the performance and productivity of the creative and dedicated team and managed operational affairs. She also worked with the Hawaii Public Health Institute to build a strategic partnership between the Hawaii Public Health Institute and the United Nations Food Systems Summit Dialogues and collaborated with Columbus Public Health's Center for Public Health Innovation on community health and well-being

Dzhuraeva has strong global credentials as a leader who embraces shared vision of collective success addressing health and global capacity building using efficient operations and fund raising through development and grants. She will work closely with Wondwossen Gebreyes, GOHi executive director, all affiliated faculty and staff across campus to lead and oversee the execution of GOHi operations and project-related activities. She will continue supervision of all project management staff our affiliated entity office in Ethiopia. Using her expertise, she will ensure that financial processes and internal control systems comply with university policies and provide oversight of budget and strategic initiatives.

GOHi staff spotlight: Mequanint Mitiku

Mequanint Mitiku is a distinguished microbiologist with nearly two decades of exceptional service in the field of clinical and public health microbiology. Currently seconded to the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) microbiology laboratory, he is at the forefront of a project aimed at combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This initiative, implemented by the Global One Health Initiative (GOHi) in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), underscores Mitiku’s key role in addressing one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time.
