GOHi provides training for IPC auditors

Implementing robust infection prevention and control (IPC) measures is crucial for delivering proper healthcare services to patients. IPC grounded in practical and evidence-based strategies protects patients and healthcare workers from preventable infections. The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) has continuously trained healthcare workers and environmental cleaning providers, specifically focusing on those working in intensive care units. This project aims to effectively manage and reduce the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.

GOHi facilitates training on proper specimen collection

Training healthcare professionals in standard specimen collection procedures is pivotal for effective disease control and prevention. Microbiology labs frequently reported receiving poor specimen quality from Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, highlighting a significant issue and leading to false positive and negative results. Addressing and rectifying these issues in the pre-analytical phase is crucial for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of laboratory outcomes. GOHi conducted training sessions to enhance the skills of nurses working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on proper specimen collection techniques.

Gebreyes participates in food security and sustainability seminar

On Wednesday, January 31 at 9 a.m. ET, Wondwossen Gebreyes will speak at Springer Nature Sustainable Development Goals Programme's panel, "Food security and sustainability from a microbiology perspective." Chaired by Karen Nelson, chief scientific officer, Thermo Fisher Scientific, this seminar will discuss how microbiology impacts food security and sustainability, including water availability, livestock and more.

Binkley publishes chapter in “Encyclopedia of Meat Sciences”

GOHi member Laura Binkley recently published a book chapter titled “Potential environmental and wildlife sources of microorganisms in meat” in the Third Edition of the “Encyclopedia of Meat Sciences” with co-authors Jeffrey LeJeune and David L. Pearl. The chapter examines transmission dynamics of priority zoonotic and antimicrobial resistant pathogens among reservoirs and their environment. Specifically, this chapter hones in on the role of wildlife in transmission of these pathogens to food animals, the role of bushmeat, high rates of transmission of antimicrobial-resistant organisms from avian species, strategies to reduce wildlife-livestock pathogen transmission, environmental exposure to antimicrobial-resistant organisms and research needs.
