Empowering Ethiopian healthcare: GOHi’s impact on microbiology and infection prevention

Over the past three years, the Ohio State Global One Health LLC (GOHi), in partnership with Ethiopia’s Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH), Zewditu Memorial Hospital (ZMH), and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has led a transformative initiative under the Global Action in Healthcare Network (GAIHN). This integrated laboratory and infection prevention and control (IPC) program has significantly strengthened Ethiopia’s antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance and healthcare infrastructure.

GOHi’s AMR project stands as a scalable, evidence-driven model for enhancing IPC and microbiology services in low-resource settings. Its success demonstrates the powerful impact of integrated international partnerships on national health priorities and global health security.

New pathways for Ohio State graduate students open through global veterinary education work in Ethiopia

Veterinary public health residents at Ohio State are finding new opportunities to engage in global health work through an ambitious initiative to improve veterinary education in Ethiopia - one that could help shape the future of food systems and public health in the region.

On May 9, leaders from across Ethiopia’s veterinary sector came together in Addis Ababa to launch the country’s Veterinary Education National Action Plan (VEd-NAP), a framework designed to support the implementation of the 2020 harmonized veterinary curriculum, meeting both the country's needs and global recommendations. The event was co-organized by the University of Gondar College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences and the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. Led by Ohio State faculty Armando Hoet and Amanda Berrian, the VEd-NAP launch is the latest milestone in a broader effort to strengthen veterinary services and support One Health goals across the region. These efforts support and align with WOAH’s recommended competencies which define the core skills new veterinary graduates should possess to meet national and international demands.

Strengthening research administration: Ethiopian delegation visits Ohio State

A delegation of Ethiopian public higher education research administrators visited The Ohio State University in June and engaged with university research leaders as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program . As part of their campus visit, the delegation met with representatives from various colleges, departments and research areas to explore strategies for strengthening research administration capacity and enhancing external research funding across Ethiopia.

Members of the Ethiopian delegation represented 10 research institutions and the Ministry of Education. Participants gained insights into processes, systems, innovation incubators, labs and commercialization centers, highlighting the significant role of research administration in supporting and leading research and innovation ecosystems.

Ohio State building capacity of immunization experts

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), trained 50 members of the regional Vaccine Adverse Events investigation task force across six regions of Ethiopia. Led by EFDA and GOHi trainers, the program covered essential topics such as the national pharmacovigilance system, basic concepts of vaccines strategies for the prevention, monitoring and management of adverse events following immunization (AEFI), and the Ethiopian AEFI surveillance system, including reporting tools.

The GOHi team continuously works to address the spread of disease, promote health and emphasize the connection among humans, animals and the environment. One way GOHi does this is through research. Read some of the latest projects the team has worked on:
