Global One Health certificate

Multidisciplinary education and training are crucial to more efficiently and effectively achieving the best health outcomes. The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) convened the College of Public Health and College of Veterinary Medicine to launch the Global One Health Graduate Certificate. This 15-credit program helps students gain a deeper understanding of epidemiology, environmental health sciences and zoonotic diseases. See how the certificate made an impact on Tiffany Claeys, a PhD student who completed the program in May 2021.

Faculty spotlight: Ahmed Yousef

Ahmed Yousef is a distinguished professor in the Ohio State College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) and was recently named the college's 10th endowed chair. Yousef's leadership and years of experience have been essential to GOHi and the TARTARE project. How agriculture is taking a One Health approach

Increasing awareness of, and greater attention to the complicated links between human and agricultural systems has led to greater support for adopting One Health principles thus promoting the agriculture sector’s transition to this approach. Hear from Joyce Turk and Dan Gustafson, GOHi External Advisory Board members, as they discuss how the agriculture sector is transitioning to a One Health approach and the changes that are being made.

GOHi kicks off AMR project

GOHi held a kickoff meeting for the new U.S. CDC-funded antimicrobial resistance (AMR) project on February 22 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. High-level leaders from the Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Public Health Institute, Ethiopian Food and Drug Administration, Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and Zewditu Memorial Hospital and other stakeholders attended, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization and the CDC's Atlanta and Ethiopia offices.

Costing of Ethiopia VPD Surveillance System

GOHi hosted a kickoff meeting on February 16 to start a CDC-funded project on the costing of the Ethiopia Vaccine-Preventable Disease (VPD) Surveillance System to strengthen Ethiopia’s core International Health Regulation capabilities. In partnership with the Ethiopian government and other in-country partners, this project aims to produce country-level estimates of the financial costs of the Ethiopian VPD Surveillance System.

Gebregiorgis joins GOH Eastern Africa office as junior accountant

Haregemar Petros Gebregiorgis joined GOH LLC as a junior accountant on January 1. Before coming to GOHi, she was a cashier at the Network of HIV Positives in Ethiopia and an accountat at the Addis Ababa Network of PLHIV Associations. Haregemar has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from St. Mary University and a Bachelor of Arts in Administrative Service Management from the Addis Ababa University College of Commerce.

Mental health challenges in the Asian American community

On February 15, Asian American Community leaders in Central Ohio had their second stakeholder meeting on Mental Health Challenges in Asian American Community beyond COVID-19, a project funded by the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation Award. Shu-Hua Wang, director, GOHi implementation science, and the team received this grant to increase awareness and education about mental health in the Asian American community and increase linkage to care.

Remembering Dr. Paul Farmer

Dr. Paul Farmer, a world-renowned doctor, recently died in Butaro, Rwanda, at 62. Farmer was known for caring for patients in low-income areas around the world and for his work to reduce ebola, H.I.V. and tuberculosis. He also helped found Partners in Health, a nonprofit healthcare organization headquartered in Boston, and the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda, which helps advance the One Health mission by training health professionals.
