GOHi expands surveillance of carbapenem resistant organisms to improve patient safety in Ethiopia

In the on-going struggle between human beings and organisms like viruses and bacteria that can cause disease, no armament of microorganisms has been more challenging than their capacity to develop a resistance to life-saving drugs. The resistance to multiple antibiotics along with their capacity to spread easily led to a significant global health concern.

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) initiated a program in 2024 to monitor carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative organisms – a bacteria that has been found to be resistant to certain antibiotics considered a last resort for treating severe infections – in the adult intensive care unit of Zewditu Memorial Hospital.

GOHi works with Ethiopian communities to prepare and respond to public health risks

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) have been working with the Tigray Region Health Bureau to strengthen its ability to assess, identify and analyze health risks that could affect area communities. By evaluating levels of vulnerability, identifying patterns and trends, and analyzing data, the results will be incorporated into emergency preparedness and response plans to reduce risks associated with various diseases and potential threats to public health.

As part of this work, GOHi conducted a workshop in early March in Mekelle to assess and quantify vulnerabilities, risks and existing capacities to provide or perform essential health services within communities as well as the health system.

Three associated GOHi faculty selected as AAAS fellows

Prosper Boyaka, professor and chair of veterinary biosciences, Pierluigi (Enrico) Bonello, professor of molecular and chemical ecology of trees in the Department of Plant Pathology and Abhay Satoskar, professor of pathology and microbiology, have been newly inducted into the 2024 class of American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows. These three join six other Ohio State scientists also recognized with this prestigious honor.
