Fifth International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface

Abstract proposals for the fifth International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface (ICOPHAI) are now being accepted. ICOPHAI 2019 will take place September 24-26 in Québec City, Canada. Submissions are encouraged across a wide range of topics related to New challenges of applying a one health approach in a changing environment. All abstracts must follow the instructions and be submitted online by May 31 at 11:59 p.m. North America Eastern Standard Time.

Vice President of Chiang Mai University visits Ohio State

Pongruk Sribanditmongkol, MD, PhD, vice president of one of the most comprehensive universities in Thailand, Chiang Mai University (CMU), visited Ohio State April 3-5. The purpose of his visit was to strengthen partnerships between the two universities in diverse areas of capacity building. CMU has a long-term partnership Ohio States Global One Health initiative (GOHi), and has hosted Ohio State students for the past 10 years, particularly in the areas of wildlife conservation medicine. Dr. Sribanditmongkol earned his PhD from Ohio State in toxicology. He currently serves as a member of the GOHi External Advisory Board. During his visit, Dr. Sribanditmongkol met with numerous university leaders and also had a detailed discussion with the GOHi Executive Board.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative explores partnership with GOHi

On April 8, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and its Biohub delegation members from its headquarters in California, visited Ohio State to meet GOHi faculty, staff and visiting scholars and the executive committee members to explore potential partnership and cooperation on current research training and capacity building projects in Eastern Africa. The CZI team included Christina Tato, PhD, immunologist and associate director of the rapid response team, Rebecca Egger, product manager, and Vida Ahyong, bioinformatician. The visit also included tours of the Ohio Supercomputer Center and the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

Updates from the Eastern Africa Regional Director

The director of GOHis Eastern Africa regional office, Getnet Yimer, visited the Ohio State campus and attended the Post Research Ethics Analysis conference on Ethics and Humanitarian Research in Columbus, Ohio on March 25-27. His stay beyond the conference created a chance to engage in strategic conversations with relevant leaders, faculty, principal investigators of projects based in Eastern Africa, fellows and students.

GOHi External Advisory Board member spotlight

Thomas Mack is an Ohio State graduate and distinguished alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine. He founded and operated Bayshore Animal Hospital in San Mateo, California for over 35 years. In 1998, he was honored with the Western Region Practitioner of the Year Award by the American Animal Hospital Association. He is a long-time supporter of charitable organizations and founded his own, Alliance for Smiles. In addition, Mack has been an advisor and supporter for GOHi since 2016.

Global Influenza Strategy 2019-2030

The lack of preparedness for severe influenza seasons and potentially pandemic strains has become an international issue. The World health Organization (WHO) has launched its latest Global Influenza Strategy. "The on-going risk of a new influenza virus transmitting from animals to humans and potentially causing a pandemic is real. The question is not if we will have another pandemic, but when. We must be vigilant and prepared the cost of a major influenza outbreak will far outweigh the price of prevention," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"Evolving face of cholera in East Africa: multidrug resistance and ESBL producing strains" will be presented on Thursday, May 16, 9-10 a.m. EST and 4-5 p.m. Eastern Africa Time, by Dr. Sam Kariuki from the Kenya Medical Research Institute.
