Message from the Executive Director

The Global One Health initiative (GOHi) set out to build capable professionals and institutional systems towards a healthy and enduring global community. To achieve this vision, GOHi has a central mission of building capacity of Ohio State and global partner institutes in education and training, research and implementation capacity, and outreach and extension capacity. Building on its shared governance system, GOHi engaged its executive body, faculty advisory committee, external advisory board members and other stakeholders, who collaboratively developed a four-year strategic plan launched on July 1. This ambitious strategic plan aligns with the university, involves academic units and takes into consideration the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Donation to GOHi supports Ohio State students global research

Balbine Jourdan is a senior veterinary student at Ohio States College of Veterinary Medicine, who is also pursuing a Masters in Public Health. She presented her research on the species takin, a hooved-animal native to the Himalayan mountainous region, at the 2018 Joint AAZV/EAZWV/Leibniz-IZW Conference after being awarded financial support from Ohio State alumnus, Tom Mack, DVM, and Ohio States Global One Health initiative.

Brazilian partner institution wins internationalization award

GOHis lead partner in Brazil, the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) is one of the winners of the Program on Internationalization (PrInt) funded through the Brazilian Higher Education Council (CAPES). UFPB is one of the 29 winners among more than 200 applicant institutes. Ohio State is committed to strengthen partnerships in One Health and beyond building capacity in drug development and medicinal plants areas. UFPB Vice President of Research Isac Medeiros is a member of the GOHi External Advisory Board and will be the lead of the PrInt program at UFPB. GOHis Executive Director Wondwossen Gebreyes will serve as a member of the International Advisory Board for the CAPES PrInt program.

Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Summit

GOHi core leadership team including Emia Oppenheim, PhD, operations director, Getnet Yimer, MD, PhD, regional director for eastern Africa, and Wondwossen Gebreyes, DVM, PhD, executive director, participated in the Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Summit in Berlin, Germany. It featured exhibits, speakers, panels and discussions with the greatest potential of innovation and science to address todays "most urgent global challenges."

GOHi External Advisory Board member spotlight

Daniel Gustafson, PhD, serves as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as Deputy Director-General for Programmes. Joining the FAO in 1994, Gustafson led offices in India and Kenya before returning to the United States to serve as the director of the FAO Liaison Office for North America. In 2012, Gustafson was appointed director of the FAO Office of Support to Decentralization, where he led efforts to strengthen leadership of the organizations country offices.

49th Union World Conference on Lung Health in the Hague

GOHi Eastern Africa Regional Director, Dr. Getnet Yimer participated in the 49th Union World Conference on Lung Health in the Hague, Netherlands October 24 - 26. The conference featured exhibits, speakers, panels and discussions. One of the most significant takeaways for Yimer was pointed out by Eric Goosby, United Nations special envoy on tuberculosis, who said, "We must remember that TB is preventable, treatable and curable. Now lets make it doable."

GOHi September webinar

The next webinar will take place on Thursday November 8, 9 10 a.m. EST (4 - 5 p.m. Eastern Africa Time). The speaker of this webinar is Professor Armando Hoet, DVM, PhD, Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, The Ohio State University, who will present on Caribbean Integrated Surveillance system on Antimicrobial Resistance in Agriculture in the Caribbean and Latin America. The location to attend in person is A100H Sisson Hall (1920 Coffey Road). You can join the webinar online.
