MOHERE program hosts inaugural workshop

The Master of Science in One Health and Emergency Research Ethics (MOHERE) program is an international joint initiative of the University of Nairobi (UoN), The Ohio State University, and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Together, these institutions aim to establish master’s and post-graduate diploma (PGD)-level programs in international health research ethics, focusing on One Health research and emergency research at the UoN. They recently held their inaugural workshop for the MOHERE program in October in Nairobi, Kenya.

GOHi to host Global One Health Symposium

GOHi will co-host the 2023 Global One Health symposium in Nairobi, Kenya, from November 2-3 with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). The symposium's theme is "Addressing Complex One Health Challenges." It will cover topics like emerging zoonotic, food, water and vector-borne challenges; data science and machine learning for predicting and modeling disease outbreaks; climate change, changing ecosystems and health; and more. The event will include several partners from Kenya, such as KEMRI, International Livestock Research Institute, International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology and the University of Nairobi, and from Ethiopia, such as the GOHi Eastern Africa Office, Addis Ababa University and the University of Gondar.

GOHi featured in U.S. CDC blog post

GOHi was recently featured in a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) blog post regarding its antimicrobial resistance (AMR) work in Ethiopia. GOHi is a member of the Global Action in Healthcare Network (GAIHN), which aims to help reduce the spread of AMR organisms. As part of this project, GOHi is working with two hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to support best practices in stopping the spread of AMR organisms.

GOHi facilitates result validation workshop on the cost of VPD surveillance in Ethiopia

GOHi surveyed the cost of vaccine-preventable disease surveillance in collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) with technical and financial support from the U.S. CDC. The main goal of the study was to identify the sources of funding for current VPD surveillance costs, including those attributable to the government and external donors.

Food safety stakeholder mapping workshop

In collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency, the National One Health Steering Committee (NOHSC) organized a two-day workshop in August in Adama, Ethiopia. Eyasu Tigabu and Biniyam Moges, GOHi food safety and zoonoses team members, represented GOHi. The workshop aimed to identify and map key stakeholders in food safety in Ethiopia, focusing on laboratory detection and surveillance.

GOHi participates in SARE workshop

Eyasu Tigabu, GOHi program lead for food safety and zoonoses, represented GOHi at the workshop. GOHi’s participation in this workshop helped identify gaps regarding rabies disease control and elimination in Ethiopia. Tigabu highlighted GOHi’s rabies work through the GHSA project, and local and international partners recognized GOHi’s contribution to rabies surveillance case management, SOPs and the document developed through GHSA.

GOHi facilitates advanced data analysis training

GOHi recently conducted two rounds of practical training on advanced data management and analysis using R. In collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)-Ethiopia, GOHi held the first training on August 9-11 at the GOHi Eastern Africa office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. GOHi facilitated the second training with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) from September 7-9 in Adama, Ethiopia. The workshops hosted 17 Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) experts currently working on PHEM data management and analysis.

GOHi published in MPDI

GOHi team members recently published “Exploring Community Perceptions of COVID-19 and Vaccine Hesitancy in Selected Cities of Ethiopia: A Qualitative Study” in Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MPDI)’s “Vaccines” in collaboration with Addis Ababa University. This study was part of a cooperative agreement funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the time the study was conducted, the vaccination level in Ethiopia was lower than the required rate to achieve herd immunity at the community level to halt the spread of disease. To gain a better understanding of community knowledge, attitudes and practices, and to better understand vaccine hesitancy, the team carried out 28 focus group discussions and 70 in-depth interviews involving 300 participants across 10 regional cities and four sub-cities of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

United States National One Health Framework draft now accepting comment

The U.S. CDC is now accepting comments on “National One Health Framework To Address Zoonotic Diseases and Advance Public Health Preparedness in the United States: A Framework for One Health Coordination and Collaboration Across Federal Agencies.” The draft framework is focused on coordination of federal activities in the United States and describes a common vision, mission and goals for key federal partners involved in implementing a One Health approach to address zoonotic diseases. This commentary will be essential for finalization of the framework. Comments must be received on or before November 6.
