2018 One Health Summer Institute concluded

GOHi supported a record 20+ trainings and workshops in Addis Ababa, Gondar and Haramaya, Ethiopia, and two different locations in Kenya during the 2018 One Health Summer Institute. There were 500+ participants from numerous African countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Additionally, 33 trainers from 10 different U.S. and African universities provided instruction on topics ranging from infectious diseases and clinical pharmacy to One Health leadership. It was one of GOHi's strongest summer institutes to date. Faculty are already showing interest to teach in 2019!

GOHi's regional director presents at 38th Annual Conference of the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association

Getnet Yimer, MD, PhD, GOHi regional director, was a plenary speaker and panel discussant at the 38th Annual Conference of the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association with a theme of Pharmacists Role in Combating the Emergence and Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance. The conference took place at the African Union, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from July 27 - 28. Dr. Yimer provided an overview of antimicrobial resistance, including its epidemiology, contributing factors, impacts, international response, control strategies using the One Health approach and future scenarios.

The Federal University of Paraíba opens its sequencing platform

The Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), Brazil started to utilize a sequencer system at the Laboratory of Evaluation of Products of Animal Origin (LAPOA). The system leverages Illumina proprietary sequencing technology that is fast and cost effective. This project was funded by a Global Innovation Initiative grant that fostered a partnership among UFPB, Global One Health initiative, Nottingham University and the University of Liverpool.

GOHi September webinar: "Salmonella, Biofilms and Chronic Carriage

This month's webinar will occur on Thursday, September 13, 9 10 a.m. EST and 4 5 p.m. Eastern Africa Time. The webinar speaker this month is John Gunn, PhD, professor and interim chair at the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity and director of the biomedical science undergraduate program at the Ohio State College of Medicine.

Tuberculous Prevention Trial (WHIP 3TB) update

GOHi representatives attended a two-day workshop in July in Johannesburg, South Africa with researchers from Mozambique and South Africa sites to discuss achievements, challenges and ways to move the tuberculosis prevention clinical trial activities forward. The visit included a site visit to the Perinatal HIV Research Unit of the WHIP 3TB site. The team was composed of Getnet Yimer, MD, PhD, Achenef Kidane, MD, Hagos Biluts Mersha, MD, PGD, FCS, and Oumer Fuad Berta, Pharm.D.

External Advisory Board member spotlight

Tom Shryock, PhD, is the chief scientific officer at Antimicrobial Consultants, LLC. Shryock founded the company in April 2015 to partner with clients on the discovery, development and regulatory approval of antimicrobial agents, alternatives, antimicrobial resistance, microbiological issues, as well as stewardship programs, policy development and training programs.

Ohio State students in the field: Global perspective by Peter O'Mathúna

Peter O'Mathúna is studying respiratory therapy at The Ohio State University and participated in this year's One Health Summer Institute with his father, Donal O'Mathúna, Ohio State College of Nursing.

"I had the privilege to spend a week in the intensive care unit at Addis Ababa's Black Lion Hospital in Ethiopia, instructing internal medicine residents on the use of mechanical ventilators through participating in patient rounds, lecture and one-on-one instructing. Although resources are very different to that at Ohio State's medical center, it was impressive to see the quality of care that Black Lion was providing to their patients as well as the eagerness to continue to learn and improve from their residents. I have just begun my senior year of respiratory therapy and look forward to future opportunities to continue to share the education that I have received with others on an international basis."

Latz appointed VP of global strategies at Ohio State

Executive Vice President and Provost Bruce A. McPheron, PhD, at The Ohio State University announced on August 21 that Gil Latz, PhD, accepted the offer to serve as vice provost for global strategies and international affairs within the Office of Academic Affairs. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, his appointment is effective on January 1, 2019, through December 31, 2023.
