March 2015

The Global SOF Foundation (GSF) is now 10 months old, and we have evolved from the organization's infancy beginning in May 2014 with 18 Corporate Partners and 95 individual members to a  rapidly growing network comprised of 35 Corporate Partners and over 550 individual members . We have several m onths to go before we close out our first year, and we are pressing hard to accomplish a few more major objectives.

The  Global SOF Symposium 2015 at the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete Beach was our first major event, and we had 348 participants from 24 nations attend the event. Producing an event that includes industry, government, academia, think tanks, and international partners requires a heterogeneous mix of panels, demonstrations, and networking opportunities, and it is difficult to get correct. Using the Fulcrum application provided by Spatial Networks allowed us to capture comments and feedback on the event to improve the agenda for the Global SOF Symposium 2016. The Symposium was the largest global SOF event of 2015, and we are confident that next year will bring 500 people from 30 to 35 nations.

If you are a partner or member, and you have ideas on how to improve GSF events, I encourage you to participate in the Programming Committee meetings. You can find the meetings on the GSF calendar on the website. We encourage partners and members to show up, grab an oar, and help us make every future GSF event better than the last.

In a meeting with staffers from the House Armed Services Committee this fall, the GSF was asked to consider drafting a "platform" document to support advocacy of those things the Foundation felt needed attention from Congress. In less than six weeks, the Outreach Committee was able to meet and outline a framework for what we called the Global SOF Foundation's Imperatives for 2015.

Right now the U.S. Congress is debating defense funding, and the Budget Control Act has not been adjusted or repealed. Everything is on the table. SOF is more critical than it has ever been, and the Global SOF Foundation is the only organization outside of the U.S. government that is actively advocating for SOF. In support of this effort, the Foundation is educating staffers on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees and other relevant entities. A special thank you for Parsons for helping us in this effort!  The GSF has also been approached by major thinks tanks to collaborate on future projects pertaining to SOF. Through the education of leaders and the public, the GSF is actively working to ensure that SOF is better utilized and better resourced in the future. If you have suggestions as to whom we should meet, please send them our way.

Sincerely,
Stuart W. Bradin
President
