LETTER FROM STU
Stuart Bradin

Team,

If you are actively trying to learn about SOF, operate in the SOF community or do business with global SOF and you do not attend GSF events then you will struggle. The Global SOF Foundation (GSF) was founded to give the Special Operations community a professional association that is like no other. We wanted the GSF to be different and more focused on achievements vice movement. Our
mission is two-fold: (1) ensure SOF resourcing and (2) bring the SOF community together.

We accomplish the first part of the mission through publications, newsletters, meetings with decision makers, and writing op-eds, etc. We advocate for international interoperability and establishing joint SOF commands in countries. Make no mistake about it: this is happening and over time the GSF will be able to do more.

We accomplish the second part of the mission through events (both substantive and networking), the online directory, and the blog/website/ social media. Historically SOF has gathered at events that are random, advertised under six months from execution, and spread out over years -- making it difficult for people to program their attendance and build relationships. If you know nothing about SOF then you need to understand that it is a community based on trust and relationships.

The GSF has three great upcoming events planned for October, November, and February that provide those in attendance the ability to interact in a great setting with SOF, government, academia, and industry. GSF events bring the public and private sector together in a way that allows people to build relationships.

Most of the GSF Corporate Partners want to support international SOF. They see the need and the opportunities, but breaking into these markets can be challenging. In the end it all boils down to relationships and a great product that meets the needs. Some partners only want to operate in the U.S. system, and I remind them that partner nations get a vote in Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and Foreign Military Financing (FMF).  Most nations are using their SOF in partnered missions, and they are actively seeking support from industry and academia for innovative capabilities that are off-the-shelf and cost-efficient. USSOCOM and other nations are actively seeking capabilities that can be used in support of partnered operations.

As we all prepare for these three upcoming GSF events I encourage everyone to participate. If you stay home you will not learn anything or meet anyone, and your ability to interact with leaders and partners will not happen. The GSF's mission is to bring the community together and our events do that. Go to  www.globalsofsymposium.org  and register for our Global SOF Symposium - Europe in Vilnius, Lithuania and engage.

Cheers,
Stu

Escape and Evasion Devices in WWII

At the outbreak of WWII in September 1939, the British Government established a military intelligence bureau (MI9) dedicated to the preparation and execution of plans to facilitate the escape of British evaders cut off behind enemy lines. This new organisation was tasked with arranging instruction and providing devices to British troops to aid in evasion and escape activities. Its work was later also adopted by the U.S. and the other Allies.   Read More.

We need your help!

In order to help active duty service members in Special Operations better transition from military to civilian life, the SOF for Life program is actively seeking retired SOF to complete a survey about their transition. We are asking those that retired to step forward and provide a little bit of their time as well as some honesty to get the facts about life after SOF.

Give us 12 minutes of your time and complete the survey.
