THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Did You Know?
This month marks the first of our Global Scholars in Canada to pass away. Rudy Wiebe—our ancient language specialist to Nigeria—was 73 and died with his wife Marlene and daughter Laura at his side. His health had been ebbing for months, but it was still very sad to say goodbye.

Christmas, by contrast, is about a baby’s birth—an event of Great Joy for All People. Mark Lowry wrote the song Mary Did You Know? in 1984, and it juxtaposes the helpless baby in Mary’s arms with the miracles and wonders that this divine child will soon perform. But what the song overlooks, and what most followers of Jesus did not understand, was that his mission was to suffer and die, and that it was only through such sorrows would liberation open to all humanity, and all creation.

The comfort in our loss is that we worship a God who knows death and dying. The joy that we have to share with students, colleagues, and through our scholarship is that through Christ’s death comes life. “Did you know?” we ask. There is good news for all people! Rudy now enjoys a new life with his risen Lord. This is the gift of a God of miracles and wonders, who was born in a feeding trough and died on a cross. Our faith knows the dark abyss, but pushes towards bright hope for tomorrow. 

In these trying COVID days, we remember that if God's kingdom is greater than death, it is also greater than COVID. May you and all your kin know the joy of Christmas this year and may you share it across all borders.
