Philip is Director of Policy and Practices from RespectAbility, a non-profit partner of GlobalMIndED dedicated to fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for and with people with disabilities. When politicians plan who to reach out in their campaigns, they rarely consider the disability population in America. One in four adults in the United States have a disability, all of whom deserve to be considered when policies and plans are made on a government level. Researchers at Rutgers University estimate that approximately 38.3 million people with disabilities already are eligible to vote in this year’s election, which is roughly one-sixth of the electorate. RespectAbility is urging even more to register and vote in the days ahead.
Voting is one of the fundamental ways to impact public policy around healthcare, transportation, employment, housing, and every other aspect of day-to-day life.
“Despite the limitations cause by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many ways to be sure that our votes count, and the Fellows at RespectAbility want to help raise that percentage even higher,” said RespectAbility Community Outreach Fellow Autumn Blalock, who wrote and produced the PSA. “Now is the time for the disability community to show up and show out again so that our voices are heard.”
RespectAbility, the creator of the PSA, is an education and advocacy nonprofit fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community. The organization previously released a series of PSAs focused on inclusive philanthropy and on disability employment.Have you voted or made your plan to do so yet? As Americans are voting in record numbers, in addition to releasing 50 state nonpartisan voters guides, we have released issue-based guides - from education to immigration - containing key information on where candidates stand on issues impacting Americans with disabilities. According to a recent study by Rutgers University, up to 38.3 million eligible voters are people with disabilities. The Community Reinvestment Act and Why It Matters for People with Disabilities: A Conversation and Call to Action with Michael Morris

Signed into law in 1977, the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) was created to encourage banks to meet the needs of all borrowers and work against the divisions created by discriminatory practices like redlining. The law has existed for 43 years to help low- and moderate-income neighborhoods through retail banking and community development. However, CRA has yet to fully support the inclusion of people with disabilities as an eligible group.
Now, the Federal Reserve Board is currently soliciting public feedback to guide future changes to the law, how banking regulations are created and how to promote greater inclusion. This is a critical opportunity for the disability community to get organized and send in our ideas.
According to the National Disability Institute, sixty percent of adults with disabilities only have a low or moderate income and that far too many Americans with disabilities live in neighborhoods that count as low- or moderate-income communities under the CRA.
We hope you will join us for an exciting and dynamic conversation with Michael Morris, JD, the founder and Senior Strategic Advisor of National Disability Institute, about why CRA matters for people with disabilities and how we can make our collective voices heard. The conversation will be moderated by Hon. Steve Bartlett, chairman of RespectAbility, former Mayor of Dallas and former President and CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable.

Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Funds SCI Opportunities
Even before the pandemic, only 27 percent of people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) were employed 10 years after injury. With more than 358,000 people living with SCI in the United States, RespectAbility is working to create opportunities so these individuals can succeed in their chosen career.
Funding from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation will support a virtual apprenticeship program that will provide four exceptionally talented adults with SCI with intensive training, mentoring and opportunities for networking. Through an advanced training program, the apprentices will gain the skills necessary for careers advancing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The apprentices also will be involved in several projects in the entertainment industry to reduce stigmas and long-standing barriers that prevent people with SCI and other disabilities from obtaining employment.
A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required. Applications now open!
