The Young Professionals Inclusive Leadership Council (YPILC) hosted their first meeting of the year last night at the GlobalMindED office garden. The attendees represent high school, college, and graduated students that came to celebrate inclusive leadership together. Last night's social also welcomed Bobby King, Vice President, DEI for Colorado Access, and Vu Tran, entrepreneur, both of GlobalMindED's board, who were able to speak with the students interested in health equity work and entrepreneurship along with Melinda Cain, one of the pillars of the GlobalMindED First Gen Leaders Program. Two additional YPILC advisors not present, Phuong Dinh and Shannon Stone, were attending the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce Awards event where our founder, Carol Carter, was honored as one of the Top 25 Most Powerful Women. 

Monthly, the YPLIC group will meet to socialize, learn, and gain mentorship from other leaders within the GlobalMindED community. In addition to those monthly sessions, YPILC members will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through organizing and executing community service events and fundraisers. This work will ultimately culminate to support the annual GlobalMindED conference and First Gen Student Leadership Program June 7-9, 2023. We will also participate in events with our partners, World Denver and other businesses and organizations supporting diverse, emerging talent.  We will also be encouraging participation in GlobalMindED’s virtual equity events taking place monthly during the academic year in K-12, HED, STEM/TECH and Health.

While polling the group, more than 75% showed interest in joining the leadership team for YPILC. Many students also mentioned interest in doing work in public health, as disparities persist for those who are of color and/or experience poverty. The group is excited to connect their networks and start to do some service work in the community, whether with students of the Denver metro area or with each other.  

This year, the Young Professionals Inclusive Leadership Council is lead by President Charlyn Moss, Chief of Staff at EdSolutions and Founder of Working Within. Hayley Kwasniewski, Development Manager at The Park People, is serving as Vice President this term and is one of the 2017 First Gen leaders who graduated from the GLobalMindED program, now dedicated to giving back what they gained through the organization. The duo will interview other young leadership to support, amplify and extend their vision.

The group looks forward to following up with attendees from last night 1:1 and in a full group to continue planning the rest of the year. Eventually, our goal is to have city-based organizations connected with our member colleges who can provide a strong network for young graduates launching their lives in post COVID times when people are often working from home in need of f connection, mentorship and inspiration beyond their home/work.
