Shabbat Shalom

A Message from Rabbi Brodkin
Dear Friends,

This week marks Shabbat Shuva, a time of repentance and introspection. If you didn’t have a chance to join us for the virtual Shabbat Shuva Drasha last night, I am pleased to present you with the podcast version of “Yom Kippur & Your Mental Health.” This episode of our Podcast will help you discover Seder and resilience through the Yom Kippur experience. Also, please note that we have an update to our schedule as we will not be holding a virtual Drasha this Sunday. Instead, the Drasha will be given live on Yom Kippur and via Podcast after the fast. Mincha will take place at 4:00 pm this Sunday (instead of 4:20 as previously announced).

I’m so excited that we are honoring Jodi Fried in our High Holiday Appeal this year. It’s vital that Kesser Israel remain a strong resource as we serve our Jewish community. To make a generous donation to the Appeal, please CLICK HERE. Alternatively, to make a donation via the Yom Kippur Aliyah Auction, please CLICK HERE to bid on an Aliyah through the online form.

The passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week came at an auspicious moment, just hours before the end of 5780. RBG leaves a great legacy as a justice who fought for equality under the rule of law. She came from a modest Jewish family in Brooklyn and rose to the greatest heights of American achievement. Beloved by tens of millions, she inspired people across the United States and far beyond. Ruth Bader Ginsburg leaves a legacy of commitment to effecting positive change and rectifying inequity through peaceful political activism and, judicially, under the rule of law.

In addition, she exemplified reasoned, thoughtful, respectful, civil engagement with others with whom she disagreed, sometimes vehemently, on matters of principle. We learn from her that we can advocate for and defend deeply held beliefs and principles while still seeing, and valuing, the essential goodness and humanity in others who may see things differently.  For example, she was close friends with her fellow jurist, Antonin Scalia, who was on the “other side” of the political spectrum. I Daven that we will see her legacy honored and cherished through the strengthening of Tzedek and Mishpat (justice & righteousness) in our society now and in the future.

In case you haven’t heard, we had an amazing experience with our live Rosh Hashana services at the MJCC, and we are looking forward to a meaningful Yom Kippur. I know that all of us, whether we are Davening at home or in the live services, will be connected in heart and spirit on this Yom Kippur. I wish you all a Gmar Chatima Tova and an easy fast.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Ken Brodkin
NEW: The Ushpizin Hunt
Are you interested in being part of creating community spirit? On Sunday October 4, the second day of Chag, Kesser Israel will be holding an "Ushpizin Hunt." Never heard of an Ushpizin Hunt? Don't worry, neither have we!

At the Ushpizin Hunt, community members will be invited to a self guided tour of 7 Sukkot around the neighborhood. Each of these Sukkot will feature a a piece of art about one of the Ushpizin (Seven Sukkot Guests). We are looking for seven families/individuals who would like their Sukkah to be featured in the Ushpizin Hunt, so that people can "hunt" for your Sukkah and find the Ushpizin.

If you have easy access to your Sukkah and you'd like your Sukkah featured, please contact Devorah Brodkin. THANK YOU! This will be a great way for people to connect in a safe manner.
Services
Pre-registration is required for all in-person services. Please contact Tuvia Berzow with questions.

Yom Kippur services are full.

Kesser Events
Hi Ladies,

Adina Schmidman from the OU sent me some wonderful guided reflection questions. I’m not sure about you, but life has been very busy and I thought how much I would appreciate having a space to journal and reflect with an intimate group of women before Yom Kippur. So, I decided to organize a guided journaling session for women.

Join me this Motzei Shabbat with a pen and paper, your heart and soul, to find some time to prepare for this powerful time of year. Hashem gave us this time to think about our past year, celebrate the accomplishments, and think about our next dreams and desires for bettering ourselves and the world.
