Is that a chill in the air? A spicy pumpkin on the loose? A monster doing the mash? It must be fall!
This month we are celebrating the new season with the return of our annual bike and pedestrian count and we need your help!
Long Beach also has conducted new bikeway improvements to the San Gabriel River Path so visitors have a clearer route. We give thanks to our team for their amazing maintenance work. There are more reasons than ever to get out this month to walk, bike, and roll.
As always, be sure to follow @goactivelb on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to stay up to date on everything to do with active transportation in Long Beach!

Bicycle and Pedestrian Count

The Long Beach Bicycle and Pedestrian Count takes place every October in dozens of locations across the City. Each year, volunteers manually count bicyclists and pedestrians and record travel behavior, including helmet use and if there’s wrong-way riding. This program is one of the longest-running bike counts in the country and relies solely on volunteers for its success.
This year’s count takes place October 27 and 29, and we need volunteers to help! Shifts are available during the following times:
- Thursday, October 27 from 7:00am to 9:00am
- Thursday, October 27 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm
- Saturday, October 29 from 12:00pm and 2:00pm

New Curb-Protected Bikeways

Bicycling just got a lot better in Long Beach! Public Works recently installed new curb-protected bike lanes on Loynes Drive from Bellflower Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway and on Spring Street from Studebaker Road to El Dorado Nature Center.
These new standard curb-protected designs help separate bikes from motor vehicles on the street, providing a less stressful riding experience and creating connected networks of separated bike lanes. Along with the curb-protected bikeways, these projects also include other street upgrades to pedestrian crossings, gutters, and more. Make sure to get out and check out the latest improvements to Long Beach’s bike network.

Saturday, September 17th marked the successful return of Beach Streets, Long Beach’s popular open streets event. The University edition of Beach Streets closed streets near CSU Long Beach to vehicle traffic, providing residents and visitors with space to ride their bikes, walk, run, skate, scoot, roll, and enjoy all types of active mobility. An extreme sports hub at Spring Street and Palo Verde featured BMX demonstrations, while kids had the opportunity to play and enjoy activities in a special kids’ hub at Whaley Park. All along the route, Beach Streets was a day of fun and a reminder of a future that can be possible when streets are open to all. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!

San Gabriel River Bike Path Maintenance

On Thursday, October 6, and Friday, October 7, 2022, crews completed maintenance and weed abatement on the San Gabriel River bike path from PCH to 2nd Street. The work required an intermittent full closure of the path, and detour signage was placed. Los Angeles County is scheduled to perform additional annual maintenance from late 2022 to early 2023. This off-street path is a critical part of the Long Beach bike network, and we appreciate everyone’s patience while this much-needed maintenance was completed!
