GOA Roadshow

at the Consulate General of India, NY

Goa is a state in western India with coastlines stretching along the Arabian Sea. Its long history as a Portuguese colony prior to 1961 is evident in its preserved 17th-century churches and the area’s tropical spice plantations. Goa's known beaches range from popular stretches at Baga and Palolem to those in laid-back fishing villages such as Agonda.

The state of Goa, in India, is famous for its beaches and places of worship. Tourism is its primary industry, and is generally focused on the coastal areas of Goa, with decreased tourist activity inland.

Goa is visibly different from the rest of India, owing to Portuguese rule which isolated it from the rest of India for 451 years. The Goan population is a mixture of Hindus and Roman Catholics, the distribution being approximately 65% Hindu and 24% Christian. There is also a smaller Muslim population.

The agrarian economy of Goa mostly depends on cultivation of cashew and coconut. Goa is a seafood destination with distinctions from other beach destinations of India. Fish is the signature seafood of Goa. Rice and fish curry make an exclusive gastronomic experience for tourists. We had 2 of the famous Goan dishes for lunch; cashew and coconut, and sea bass curry with rice. It was delicious.
