Agent Licensing Uniformity

PIA supports increasing uniformity and reciprocity for producer licensing through state insurance departments and, as necessary, through targeted federal legislation.

  • Working with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and state insurance departments to increase uniformity and reciprocity for producer licensing.
  • Working with stakeholders to ensure that PL 114-1 (2015), which created the National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers (NARAB), is implemented in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Monitoring the activities of the Federal Insurance Office (FIO) related to producer licensing issues and working with stakeholders to ensure that the independent agency system is protected.

The 2019 Federal Legislative Summit (FLS) is held in conjunction with the PIA National Spring Governance meetings, which are Monday, April 1 through Thursday, April 4.
This web page will be updated over the upcoming months with more details about the FLS!
What Is the Federal Legislative Summit?
The annual PIA Federal Legislative Summit (FLS) is a gathering of PIA members in the nation’s capital to meet with their elected representatives. This is a great opportunity to meet with your members of Congress to discuss issues that are of importance to you as an independent insurance agent.

Google has purchased a minority stake in Applied Systems , which provides insurance agency software, cloud based software and other tech for independent agencies. CapitalG is the growth equity investment fund at Alphabet, Google's parent company.

Reid French, chief executive officer at Applied Systems, confirmed that Google, through CapitalG, will become a minority investor in the insurance agency software company. At the same time, French added that the financial stake Google/CapitalG holds in Applied Systems is a significant one.

Jesse Wedler, a principal with CapitalG, was quoted in Insurance Journal as making supportive remarks about the independent agency channel, albeit noting at the same time he's not a spokesman for Google's insurance strategy. "Our investment is only going to do well if the agency channel goes well," Wedler said. "I am not a spokesperson for Google's insurance strategy overall, but that is 100 percent the case—we are believers in the agency channel."

A previous attempt by Google to enter the property-casualty industry ended in failure. In 2015-2016 the company attempted to sell auto insurance through its now-defunct Google Compare site.
