Fall 2018 was exceptionally busy for ACCTS staff ministry around the world with ministry trips to Argentina, Asia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Moldova and Romania. Here are some excerpts from their reports (in chronological order):
Finland: 60 Years of Military Ministry: For 60 years military believers in Finland have shared Christ through their military Christian fellowship "
PHS"
.
In September the MCF celebrated its 60th anniversary with thankfulness for God's provision.
Many younger, active-duty personnel attended the celebration, which is an encouraging answer to prayer as Christianity has recently declined in Finland in the under-30 population group). A former ACCTS intern is now the president of "
PHS"
and the celebration included two evening concerts for Finnish youth, and outreach in the community. All the participants left the celebration encouraged by what God has done through the MCF and confidently hopeful that He will continue to use military believers who are committed to Him.
Asia:
We returned from participating in the East Asia Interaction in Korea 2018 on 17 Oct. It was a wonderful gathering of delegates from all 9 Military Christian Fellowship (MCF) countries of East and Central Asia. ~70 total participants included many active duty personnel from Korea. We're now launching into South Asia for our annual support mission to the Association of Military Christian Fellowships (AMCF) community. There are many challenges in the countries we will visit but the Lord has allowed us to encourage them to meet together and reach their militaries for Christ. We're privileged to be traveling as a couple on this trip along with our ACCTS Videographer who will capture some of our travels in Bhutan, India, Nepal and Thailand.
Czech Republic: Thank you for praying for the 20
th
anniversary celebration of the Czech Republic's MCF in early October. The conference was well attended with approximately 60 participants - five from Slovakia, three from the US, and the remainder from the Czech Republic. The meetings were informative and uplifting. One session was led by a chaplain from Slovakia who urged us to become involved with agencies outside the church in order to share how the Gospel is needed by society. I made a short presentation on ACCTS and its role in AMCF, and here was also good fellowship and conversation in the evenings. Praise God for His work in the Czech Republic!
Argentina - Fellowship and Spiritual Unity:
"It's a joy to be with Latin American military believers. They love each other and the Lord and are amazingly enthusiastic in their fellowship!"reported ACCTS' Executive Director after attending the South American AMCF Regional Conference in October. The Argentina MCF hosted the meeting, which included over 110 participants from seven South American nations. The conference emphasized reconciliation with God, unity among believers, and endurance through life's difficulties. It was a spiritual respite for many participants, as evidenced by the time and effort it cost them to attend -- several groups traveled for days to get there, and one participant saved up more than a year's salary to attend. "
This conference
helped to strengthen the ties of friendship between the MCFs of each country, and it taught me that Jesus moves in different ways in each MCF to glorify his name,"
noted one participant. Following the conference, the MCF hosted additional ministry training for regional MCF leaders and members. During both events, the closeness of the believers was unmistakable:
"Many of these people only see one other every two years, but their love for each other was strong, and they were so sensitive to the needs of others. Several times I watched groups of people spontaneously stop to pray for someone, and, when they discovered that one of their number needed surgery, they gladly took up a love offering to meet the financial need."
Australia - Thriving in Christ:
"Thriving in Christ in a Challenging World
" was the theme of October's AMCF South Pacific Regional Conference in Australia, which included Bible teaching
and workshops on such topics as networking, strengthening marriages, Christian leadership, and military Christian ethics.
Seven island nations were represented at the conference which featured the inauguration of the new AMCF vice president for the region. "
It was important to meet with believers in this region as the new AMCF vice president assumed his duties,"
noted one staff member. "
We spent a lot of time in discussions with the AMCF president, the new vice president, and national military Christian fellowship leaders. Our conversations helped them learn how ACCTS' programs can benefit their MCFs, and they helped us better understand how to serve indigenous military Christians."
This conference occurred shortly after two other international ministry trips, and despite the cultural differences, people have the same spiritual needs around the world. Whether in Finland or Argentina or Australia, military Christians want prayer for wisdom to minister effectively as they live out their faith in their nations' armed forces. They also seek prayer for their families and friends in the struggles we all encounter. Such diversity of cultures, language, tastes, history, and traditions attests to the miracle of Christ uniting us as one family under God. Although we may come from different branches of the Christian church, it is Christ alone who motivates these international MCF leaders to serve Him as they serve their countries.
Eastern Europe:
Praise God for a fruitful trip to Moldova and Romania! In 1 Timothy 1:12 we read: "I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service." Here are some trip highlights:
Wednesday, 24 October
- I visited my host's English class and then participated in a meeting with the military hospital director to discuss plans for next summer's English camp. We then met with a Pastor who updated us on the Ukrainian refugee situation in Moldova.
Thursday, 25 October
- A long day of travel to the Moldova/Romania border. Completing border formalities was a slow process (1.5 hours) but soon we were on our way to Targu Mures, 300 miles away. Upon arrival in Targu Mures, we spent the night with Romanian MCF leader.
Friday, 26 October
- Following lunch at a Transylvanian restaurant, we traveled 100 miles to the Christian Mission Center "Peace"in Selimbar, where we attended the 11th annual conference of the "Cornelius"MCF of Romania. The theme of the 3-day conference was "The Mind of Christ," based on 1 Corinthians 2:16. More than 45 delegates attended, with representatives from Moldova, Poland, Romania and the US.
Saturday, 27 October
- The morning session consisted of reports by international guests; the military ministry initiatives in Moldova, an ACCTS overview of ministry in Eastern Europe, 21 years of ministry by the Polish MCF "Korneliusz," and recent Military Ministry International (ACCTS' partner organization in the UK) ministry in Bulgaria. A special guest was the European Command Chaplain who provided his perspective on the role of chaplains, particularly in ministering to various faith groups.
Sunday, 28 October
- After breakfast, we had more testimonies and special music, followed by a communion service. The conference ended with the noon meal.
This was a blessed time of fellowship with old and new acquaintances, and it was a great encouragement to see how the Lord is at work in this region. It was an excellent opportunity to share ideas for ministry, plan for the future and pray for one another. Of note was the number of younger participants, a sign that God is using these MCFs to build his kingdom in the region.
Canada:
ACCTS staff joined the Canadian MCF for their third annual prayer retreat from 9-11 November at the National House of Prayer in Ottawa. The focus of the retreat was intercessory prayer for Canadian military families. The group prayerfully studied various aspects of intercessory prayer - its object and purpose, key elements in effective intercession, and how the group should approach God during the weekend. Most of the retreat was devoted to intercession for chaplains, supporting churches, MCF members, and other Canadian Forces families.
On Sunday, the participants walked to the National War Memorial in the center of the capital for a ceremony of remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. Thousands of veterans from World War Two and other conflicts crowded the square across from Canada's parliament, along with their families and various government and military leaders. The MCF concluded their retreat by drawing out the themes and ministry principles that emerged from this time of prayer and accompanying discussions, as well the remembrance ceremony.
The MCF president was encouraged by the retreat: "The outcome I wanted was the genesis of a prayer network across Canada for the military community, since prayer is the first line of operation in waging the spiritual warfare we now face." He then called for prayer-focused discipling in all of the local fellowships across Canada.
The weekend was a time of rich fellowship, intense prayer, and encouraging networking with churches and other ministries. Please continue to uphold the Canadian MCF as they wrestle with many of the same challenges facing military Christians around the world.
