LAURIE
GUEST PREACHER THE REV. LAURIE ROFINOT THROUGH AUGUST 16

Please welcome back the Rev. Laurie Rofinot as our guest preacher for the next four Sundays! Laurie was with us the Sunday after Christmas and the 3rd Sunday after Easter.

Laurie has been a priest in our Diocese since 1987 and has had a rich and varied "career," serving a dozen congregations as a rector, priest-in-charge, assistant, interim, college chaplain, and hospital chaplain - even as an interim Lutheran pastor. Now she is a dedicated supply and sabbatical priest, filling in where needed, and greatly enjoying leading worship with good people like you! With roots in the Pacific Northwest (Spokane and Seattle, WA), Laurie met her husband Pat Michaels in the Midwest (Minneapolis) and they moved to the Boston area in the early 1980s. (Pat is the long-time Music Director at St. James's, Cambridge, having out-lasted at least 10 rectors and interim priests!) They've lived in the same old house in Davis Square, Somerville, for over 25 years, and they visit their adult daughter, who now herself lives in Minneapolis, whenever possible.

ORGAN NOTES: A Revolutionary Organ: The Cavaille-Coll Organ at Caen
By Linnea Wren

Cavaille Coll organ in the Men's Abbey, Caen, France
The French Revolution (1789-1799) brought wrenching social and political upheaval to France. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, convulsed the nation in violence, and culminated in the coronation of Napoleon as emperor.

By 1793, revolutionaries turned their reforming zeal on the Catholic Church. The accelerating attacks resulted in the exile of 30,000 priests and the executions of many others, including sixteen Carmelite nuns who met the guillotine singing the Laudate Dominum. Churches were closed and church property was vandalized. Countless church organs were destroyed, their pipes pillaged for metal that was melted into bullets.

In 1801, under Napoleon's leadership, France began to rebuild its churches and to repair and build new organs again. In 1832, the great organ builder, Aristide Cavaille-Coll (1811-1899), came to Paris. Born into a dynasty of organ builders of Spanish origin, Cavaille-Coll built instruments unlike any that had come before them. He aimed to replicate with the organ the richness and dynamic capabilities of the orchestral idiom. Through his many innovations, he created complex tones, colorful effects and orchestral colors that had never been produced by earlier organs. His organs came to fill the iconic sacred buildings of France with majestic sound.

Among those buildings is the Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey) at Caen, founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror. Cavaille-Coll completed the organ is 1885. Listed as a French national cultural heritage, the organ is today in its original form of 1885. The sounds of this great organ are one of the organ sets that Christ Church, Needham will acquire in its new organ.

In the same year that he reaffirmed the status of the Roman Catholic Church as the majority church of France, Napoleon founded the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry. Many famous French entrepreneurs and inventors are listed on the walls of its headquarters in Paris. Among the scientists, aviators, and other inventors is Aristide Cavaille-Coll. His organs were one of the most complex machines invented up to that time. They represented the pinnacle of technological achievements. Cavaille-Coll himself might even be considered a French revolutionary.
