You show up at the Olympics, and you're no longer you; you're an American Olympian. You're part of this greater whole, and the individual doesn't matter.

Unless you live under a rock, you know the 2018 Olympic Games are currently being played in Pyeongchang, South Korea. I have been inexplicably fascinated with these winter games. As a Floridian, winter sports are not exactly an everyday occurrence. When someone says skiing, I think of a nice glassy lake and not an alpine peak. Needless to say, I have learned about a whole host of new (to me) sporting events during these games. I have committed some of them to memory during these games:
- Alpine Super G – This is a skiing event that is a blend of downhill and slalom. It is considered a speed event. The name just sounds intense.
- Alpine Combined – One run of downhill and two runs of slalom. Aggregate time wins. I love events that combine disciplines.
- Biathlon – Mix of cross country skiing and shooting a .22 rifle. No, it’s not biking and running.
- Skeleton/Luge- I thought all sliding events were some form of bobsledding. These are single rider ice sliding events. In Luge the rider is on his/her back and they lay on their stomach for skeleton.
- Speed Skating Short Track - Short track event where skaters race each other. Tight turns and lots of crashes.
Despite my childlike curiosity for all these new events, one thing is common throughout. All of these athletes are competing and performing on a world stage like no other. Nothing sums up the Olympic spirit better than a comment from Shaun White, US Olympic Snowboarder and Gold Medalist. Coming into the final run of the snowboard halfpipe, Shaun White, in his last Olympics, had to pull off the best run of the day to win gold. He did it and here is what he said after, “
I did a run that frightened me, that I’ve never done before, even in practice. I had to do it, not only better and bigger than the guys before me, but do this thing that I’d never done in order to win the Olympics
.” The idea that the world’s best snowboarder had to perform beyond his skill level to achieve the gold medal, well, that to me is what the Olympics is all about. Here is the video of his amazing gold medal run.

It's great to be a Florida Gator
- J&C named to Gator100 list for third time
|
|
Jimerson & Cobb is proud to announce that our firm has once again made the Gator100 list! The Gator100 is an award presented by the University of Florida honoring the world's top 100 fastest growing businesses owned or led by UF Alumni. On the list, we ranked in at number 65. Honorees were treated to a welcome reception the night of February 8, followed the next day by breakfasts with their respective colleges, a Gator100 showcase, and then the awards lunch. J&C is privileged to have been selected three times for this honor, and it was a pleasure for us to spend a day in the presence of some of the world's best and brightest entrepreneurs. Congratulations to
all of this year's winners
.
Please note the red carpet glam face of J&C Partner Joby Birr above. If looks could kill, that guy would be a weapon of mass destruction.

Occasionally when you are driving in Florida, you can see a large earthen creation that does not look like it belongs in our state. Trash mounds stick out in Florida. In fact, some of them are given names like Mount Trashmore. Mount Trashmore has even made the List of Florida’s Highest Points. These “trash mountains” continue to be an economic and environmental concern, especially with the increasing population of certain areas.

John Rutledge, JD Candidate
To bring a suit against a foreign corporation, or anyone for that matter, the court must be a “proper venue” for the suit. Essentially, just because a state has jurisdiction does not mean that a plaintiff can pick whichever court he wants. Without a proper venue, the lawsuit cannot proceed.

The annual Jimerson Cobblet Goes to...
|
|
Each year at J&C we have an in-your-face Firm Cup competition. We host fun firm events and competitions throughout the year, and those J&C team members who participate can earn points towards winning the "Jimerson Cobblet." We recently held our Annual Firm Cup Final at Dave & Buster's, and as you can see, the competition was fierce. Finalists battled it out in Pop-A-Shot, Nascar Racing, NFL Quarterback Challenge, and Dance Dance Revolution. In the end, Brandon Meadows emerged the victorious champion. Congrats, Brandon, and well done!
