This year, we are proud to introduce the life-changing Hughbanks Family Scholarships, named for our friend and Foundation co-founder C. David Hughbanks who granted a substantial portion of his estate to the Golden Beaver Scholarship Committee, to bestow upon worthy applicants attending schools and trade programs in Washington State.
Join friends and family to recognize this group of hard-working seniors. Let's congratulate their efforts! You do not need to be a Golden Beaver to attend this celebration of Ballard High School achievers.

These Scholarships Will Be Announced
The Golden Beaver Scholarships
The Golden Beaver Scholarship Program is meant to stimulate, within the Ballard student body, the desire to achieve goals that prepare them for advanced education and/or training upon graduation.
Hughbanks Family Scholarships
These life-changing scholarships are newly available in 2024 due to last fall's substantial donation from the estate of Ballard High School Foundation Co-Founder C. David Hughbanks ’54. Awards will be given to students who have an array of interests, backgrounds, academic achievements, and post-high school educational goals, who will be pursuing college or trade education locally, in Washington state.
Tim Nygard '01 "Legacy" Ballard Scholarship
In memory of Tim Nygard '01 who passed in March 2023 after a three-year battle with colon cancer. Nygard is the son, brother and nephew of Ballard graduates. The scholarship is being bestowed on a graduating Beaver with legacy roots who models character, compassion and friendship to other students.
John "Jack" Lawson Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Ballard High School Golden Beaver Past President and Scholarship Chair Jack Lawson '52. Jack was a very strong advocate for Golden Beaver Scholarships and worked tirelessly to benefit as many graduating seniors as possible.
Einar Johanson Scholarship
In gratitude to Einar Johanson '47 for his significant donation in support of graduating seniors. Einar, a longtime Sunset Hill resident, successful business owner, was still an active member of the Ballard community before passing on Dec. 3, 2023 at the age of 94. He was a generous supporter of not only Ballard High School but many local community organizations as well.
Judith "Judy" Olson Rikansrud Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Ballard High School Foundation Board Member and Past President, and Golden Beaver Membership Chair Judy Olson Rikansrud '58. For more than 20 years, Judy tirelessly gave of her time, energy and financial resources to support the Ballard High School Beavers. A smile always appeared when BHS became part of any conversation.
McMuldroch-Lathrop Family Scholarships
Parents Chris McMuldroch and Jennifer Lathrop honor their connection to Ballard High School through this generous gift. Chris served as a Robotics Team mentor for more than 10 years (longer than the couple's children attended Ballard High School) and also benefitted as a scholarship recipient, himself, when he graduated from high school.
The Daniel Chavez Scholarship
In honor of 2003 Ballard High School graduate Daniel Chavez. Lance Corporal Chavez was a hero at the time of his death, and only his Company knew until the Marine Corps honored him for his heroism three months later.
The Ballard Nineteen Scholarship
In remembrance of the nineteen men from Ballard High School who died serving in Vietnam. The scholarship is open to seniors related to the fallen soldiers, or who have a family member in the armed forces.
