PATA Destination Experience

Forum and Mart 2023

PATA Destination Experience Forum & Mart 2023, organized in collaboration with destination partners, the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry & Performing Arts of Sarawak, the Sarawak Tourism Board, and the Sarawak Convention Bureau, brought 272 delegates from 28 destinations to Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia during the period of June 21-23.

The three-day event featured 11 main stage sessions, a two-day table-top tradeshow, and a half-day destination tour that allows the delegates to explore the iconic natural and cultural treasures of Sarawak including the Orangutan Sanctuary, Siniawan Old Town, Sarawakian cuisines, and more.

Borneo cuisine staples include grilled fish, barbecued prawns, fried rice, noodles, and local vegetables seasoned with garlic, ginger, and rich sauces. The rainforest provides many of the locals' favorite treats.

Every native group in Sarawak has their own lifestyle, traditions, cultures, and also foods. Sarawak cuisine is less spicy, and has a subtle taste. Many say a trip to Sarawak is not complete without enjoying a plate of kolo mee.

Sarawak Gastronomy Tour

Wet Market & Food Demo

Sarawak Laksa is a spicy noodle dish laced with beansprouts, shredded chicken and prawns in rich coconut gravy. The late food and travel host Anthony Bourdain has even rated it as one of the world’s top 10 hawker dishes.

Kolo Mee is an egg noodle dish served with minced beef, pork, chicken or thinly sliced char siew (barbecued pork).

Umai Ikan with Sago Pearls

Umei is a spicy salad of raw marinated red snapper fish, limes, and shallots, and is the traditional dish of the Melanau people.

Manok Pansoh is chicken cooked in bamboo.

If gastronomy tourism is marketed effectively, this ‘niche’ form of tourism could create a significant boost in visitation and expenditure as it is a huge attractor for high-value tourists.

UNWTO Declares Jordan a Regional Hub

for Medical & Wellness Tourism

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on July 6, 2023 announced Jordan as a regional hub for medical and wellness tourism during its “Medical and Wellness Tourism” conference held in the Dead Sea area.

Minister of Tourism Makram Al Queisi said that Jordan has already established itself as a “pioneer” in medical tourism. The first open-heart surgery, the first liver transplant and the first conjoined twins separation surgery in the Middle East were all performed in Jordan, according to Queisi.

He also noted that Jordan is distinguished by its qualified human resources in the sector. According to 2021 statistics, Jordan has about 26.6 physicians per 10,000 inhabitants, which exceeds the global average of 17.2 physicians per 10,000 inhabitants, he said. There were also about 35.2 nurses per 10,000 people during the same year, which “remarkably” higher than the global average of 28.7”Medical and Wellness Tourism” per 10,000 people, Queisi added. Jordan received around one million patients from 71 countries over the past five years, except for 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Bank ranked Jordan among the top five destinations in the world for medical tourism and first in the region.

Japan Airlines "Any Wear, Anywhere" Sustainability & Carbon Emissions Reduction

Aiming to provide travel experiences involving less luggage and visualize environmental value

Japan Airlines wants to take the guesswork out of packing with a new clothing rental service for international travelers. For a year, the airline will allow travelers on JAL-operated flights to rent a set of clothes for their time in the country, according to the airline. The "Any Wear, Anywhere" initiative, which will be in place through Aug. 31, 2024, is intended to cut down on carbon emissions by reducing the weight of JAL’s aircraft.

“The concept of the Service is therefore to provide a travel experience with minimal luggage by offering clothing rentals at the destination, thereby creating environmental value.”

The rentals will be run by the Sumitomo Corporation, which will be responsible for getting, delivering, and laundering all the clothes. JAL said to further its sustainability goals, the items will be “obtained from excess stock of apparel and pre-owned clothing, thereby promoting the concept of a circular economy.”

The airline's new wardrobe rental service helps reduce luggage weight and carbon emissions.

Haneda Airport's Three Terminals

The massive complex Haneda Airport Garden opened in January 2023. Directly connected to the Arrival Lobby on the 2nd floor of Terminal 3. This retail paradise has about 80 shops and restaurants, two hotels, a hot spring spa, a convention hall useful for MICE, and a bus terminal connecting Tokyo with the rest of Japan.

On the 4th floor of the international terminal (Terminal 3) is a shopping and dining area called Edo Koji (Edo Lane), designed to recreate the atmosphere of bygone days when Tokyo was known as “Edo.” Newly renovated this March, the area holds more than 20 restaurants unique to Japan including Edomae sushi, yakitori, and oden restaurants. In the latest reopening, hot topics were the famous sukiyaki restaurant “Ningyocho Imahan,” “SPAGHETTERIA VAVnova,” and the onigiri (rice ball) specialty shop “Onigiri Konga,” serving up the taste passed down from the famous Tokyo rice ball shop, “Bongo.” Before you leave Japan, treat yourself to a traditional Japanese family favorite, onigiri.
