Program Spotlight: The Fours
|
The Fours Preschool Program develops skills in literacy and math. The written word is highlighted through songs, poems, nursery rhymes, stories and books. Children are introduced to and encouraged to use inventive spelling and manipulate print as they sign-in daily, label murals, create graphs and add to class messages. Mathematics become a key part of curriculum content. The children practice one-to-one correspondence, rote count backwards and forwards to 10, sort using 3+ attributes, find patterns and work together to compare data in graphs. This program also continues daily Spanish lessons.
These classrooms are referred to as the Frogs and Butterflies
. Lunch Bunch until 1:15pm and Full-Day Preschool Enrichment until 6pm is available.

At GPS we help students' future success students find success as readers and writers because we give by giving them the freedom to invent their own spellings when they write. We encourage children to take risks and to spell words on their own to help them become better readers and writers. Inventive Spelling improves both a child's phonological and orthographic growth. It is a necessary stage to develop the proficiency as a competent and confident student!
The International Literacy Association recently released a brief in July that recommends the teaching of "systematic and explicit" phonics in all early-reading instruction. Education Week newspaper states that "phonics are a bridge to meaning, reasoning and a necessary step toward being able to read any word."

The GPS Kindergarten students have been busy experimenting with Simple Machines and proudly displayed their hard work for their families at The Simple Machine Expo on our playground! Simple Machines make work easier and include the Lever, Wheel & Axle, Pulley, Inclined Plane, Wedge and Screw. Students discovered the science behind catapults, balance boards, flag poles, rollercoasters, balance scales, seesaws and more. Simple Machines are everywhere - just ask a GPS Kindergartner!

Tracy Foster
Music & Movement Specialist
15 Years of Teaching Experience
Music has always been an important part of Tracy's life. From her first job offer at age 5 to play the organ at the grand opening of a local music store to her current role as Music Specialist at GPS. Tracy's enthusiasm is contagious and the children of GPS look forward to their time with her discovering songs, instruments, dance and expression. She helps children create sound by experimenting with a wide variety of hand-held instruments while developing both motor and social skills. Hearing the subtle differences in sound and pitch also increases phonemic awareness which greatly improves early reading skills. Each year students participate in the annual Spring Sing performance at a local high school. This yearly event is a GPS favorite and is sure to impress as classes sing and perform in both English and Spanish.
"Music energizes and brings smiles and laughter to every occasion and injects elements of fun, creativity and collaboration into learning. I feel so lucky to be sharing the children's expression with them and see the sparkle in their eyes!"
