Mondays with the Mayor

On this week's "Mondays with the Mayor" live stream, Mayor Laura Weinberg is joined by Golden Fire Marshall, Brett Ballentine, to answer the following questions about wildfire mitigation.

  • What Fire Mitigation efforts are being conducted by the City?
  • What can residents do on their properties for fire mitigation?
  • Why is this work so vital for the safety of residents and the city?
  • Where can you learn more about fire mitigation?

If you would like to learn more or submit a request, please visit the Golden Fire Department's web page.

You can always watch recordings of the live streams on the City's Facebook page.

Beetles Released in Tucker Gulch

Last Thursday, a specialized group of flea beetles was released in Tucker Gulch as part of a targeted biological control effort against leafy spurge, an aggressive invasive plant designated as a List B species on Colorado’s Noxious Weed List.

Leafy spurge spreads rapidly and crowds out native vegetation, making it a serious ecological threat in open spaces like Tucker Gulch. To help manage its spread without relying solely on herbicides, the City partnered with the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Palisade Insectary to introduce natural predators of the plant.

The beetles lay their eggs in the root systems of leafy spurge. Once hatched, the larvae feed on the roots, reducing the plant’s ability to grow and reproduce.

By introducing these flea beetles, we’re working toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious solution to controlling noxious weeds in Golden.

Councilor Paul Hasemen's Railroad Talk at the GCC

Wednesday, July 23, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Golden’s railroad history is as bold and adventurous as the trains that once thundered through town. Once home to no fewer than seven different rail lines, with fierce rivalries with Denver to the dramatic climbs up Clear Creek Canyon, Golden was the hub of it all. Its deep ties to railroading made it the natural choice for the Colorado Railroad Museum, a fitting tribute to a city built on steel and steam.

Come hear all about it from Ward 2 City Councilor Paul Haseman! This event is free to attend.

Creek Update

Summer has arrived in Golden, and Clear Creek is as busy as ever. As water levels drop and temperatures rise, more people are getting into the water or floating. But it’s important to remember: Clear Creek is a natural waterway, not a lazy river or a swimming pool. Currents can be stronger than they appear, and hazards like rocks, branches, and sudden drops can shift without warning.

If you’re planning to get in the creek, please take a moment to prepare. The right gear makes a real difference:

  • Water shoes or sandals that fasten around your feet- flip flops and strappy sandals can get swept away easily, and bare feet can get scraped up by rocks on the creek bed.
  • Quick-dry clothes or swimsuits - Choose quick-dry clothing or swimwear. Cotton holds water and can pull body heat away fast, increasing your risk of hypothermia, even in the summer.
  • Polarized sunglasses with straps- polarized lenses help you see submerged hazards more clearly. If you do hit an obstacle, retainer straps will keep your glasses from getting lost.
  • Sun hats- reduce the risk of sunburn with a wide-brimmed hat covering your neck and face. Just don’t forget to apply waterproof sunscreen everywhere else!

As always, PFDs are highly recommended, especially for children under 18. Even experienced swimmers can get caught off guard by fast currents or underwater hazards

Please respect all posted warnings. Your safety—and the safety of our first responders—depends on it.
