Remembering Former Mayor Marjorie Sloan
Golden is mourning the passing of former Mayor Marjorie Nilson Sloan, who died on July 15, 2025, at age 80. A longtime civic leader, educator, attorney, and passionate advocate for justice and community, Margie left a lasting legacy on the City of Golden.
Sloan served as Golden’s 37th mayor from 2012 to 2019, helping guide the city through major projects, including revitalization of the Clear Creek corridor and protecting the community from the impacts of the proposed Denver Beltway. Her efforts in sustainable planning, civic engagement, and public safety earned her recognition across Colorado and beyond.
Before and after her time as mayor, she served on numerous boards and commissions and was later elected to the RTD Board of Directors. Her philanthropic work included establishing a scholarship for students pursuing careers in public service at Red Rocks Community College.
A public Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on August 2 at the Golden Community Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Sloan Family Scholarship through the Red Rocks Community College Foundation (please note "Sloan Family Scholarship" in the instructions).

Railroad Talk at the GCC
Wednesday, July 23, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Join Councilor Paul Haseman and Executive Director of the Colorado Railroad Museum, Paul Hammond, for an exploration of Golden's railroad history.
Golden’s railroad history is as bold and adventurous as the trains that once thundered through town. From fierce rivalries with Denver to the dramatic climbs up Clear Creek Canyon, Golden was the hub of it all—home to no fewer than seven different rail lines. Its deep ties to railroading made it the natural choice for the Colorado Railroad Museum, a fitting tribute to a city built on steel and steam.
This event is free to attend.
