Former Mayor Marjorie Sloan's Celebration of Life Details and Closure Information

Saturday, August 2

The Celebration of Life for former Golden Mayor Marjorie Sloan will take place on Saturday, August 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Golden Community Center (1470 10th St.). A formal program will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception. Doors will open at 9:00 a.m., and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

The City anticipates a large crowd and is actively working to accommodate all guests and community members comfortably. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream link will be shared on the City’s social media channels late Friday or early Saturday morning.

Parking

If you're planning to attend, please consider your travel and parking options ahead of time. Public transportation is encouraged, including the Ore Cart shuttle. Event parking will be available west of Maple Street on 10th Street, including the Golden Community Center lots, Planning building lots, and the Kayak Drop-Off lot. These areas will be reserved for event attendees from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Accessible parking will remain open to the general public in the Kayak lot, but all other access will be restricted during that time.

The upper parking lot on 8th Street will have spaces reserved for family and event vendors. The remaining spaces in that lot will be used for accessible parking, and a drop-off area will be designated for easier entry into the building.

Please note that the Community Center will open to the public at 1:00 p.m. that day. Splash will open early at 7:00 a.m. for lap swim.

We appreciate your care in planning ahead and thank you for honoring Mayor Sloan’s legacy.

North Ford Complete Street - Initial Community Survey Now Open

The City of Golden has launched the North Ford Complete Street Design Project, which aims to increase accessibility, connectivity, and safety along the North Ford Street corridor between SH93 in north Golden to 10th Street downtown, as determined by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan.

The first phase of the design project includes gathering public input on current transportation conditions and determining the goals and aspirations of the community for an improved corridor.

Learn more and participate in the survey on the Guiding Golden page.

Become a Host Family for an Exchange Student

The Golden Rotary Club is seeking three local families to host a high school exchange student during the 2025–2026 school year. Each family hosts for about three months.

Host families provide a welcoming home, meals, transportation, and include the student in family life. Rotary covers school fees, provides a monthly stipend, and offers full support throughout the year.

Golden Goes Global!

The City of Golden is proud to host the Society of Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA) 60th Anniversary from Saturday, August 3, through Thursday, August 7. This marks a historic moment, as it's the first time this prestigious international gathering is being held in the United States.

The SGA Convention brings together geologists, researchers, and professionals from around the globe to share knowledge and explore innovations in mineral deposit science. Golden is honored to welcome these world-renowned experts to our community—especially fitting, given our own deep ties to mining history, geology, and education.

We look forward to showcasing Golden’s natural beauty, hospitality, and rich scientific heritage as we welcome guests from across continents for this milestone event.

Creek Update

Downtown Golden and the Clear Creek corridor were busy last weekend in conjunction with Buffalo Bill Days.

The City of Golden is continuing last year’s RFID (radio frequency identification) data collection practices, helping staff better understand recreation and traffic patterns on the creek. Tags are available from the Clear Creek Ambassadors tent on weekends or at the Golden Community Center during its operating hours. The data collected from tags is completely anonymous and not used to track individual tubes; rather it is used to identify broader patterns of activity, guiding the management and staffing of the creek during the busy summer season.

Alcohol and smoking are not permitted on Clear Creek or along the creek trail. Please follow these rules to ensure safety and fun while visiting the creek.

Please respect all posted warnings. Your safety—and the safety of our first responders—depends on it.
