Residential Zoning Code Update Adopted by Council

Last night, City Council passed the Residential Zoning Code Update and the building moratorium is now lifted. Find all application materials on our Development Application page.

This concludes Phase 1 of the Zoning Code Update adoption process, and includes all of the residential form zones and form types that apply to R1, R1A, R2 and R3 zoning in Golden, which are the zone districts that were impacted by the moratorium. The form zone map containing just these residential zone districts accompanied this portion of the code adoption process as well.

We will now move into Phase 2, which will involve the remaining commercial form zones and form types.

Tree Limb Drop-off Following Our Spring Snowstorm

Following the late spring snowstorm that blew through the Front Range on May 20-21, the City of Golden opened a tree limb collection site at Golden Gate Canyon Road, just west of Newstar Way (see the Google map). The tree limb collection site is primarily for Golden residents. The City previously reported that the site will remain open for the next two weeks, and strives to make that possible, but can only guarantee that the site will remain open until it reaches capacity. For information about all tree limb drop-off sites around Jefferson County, please view JeffCo’s list of tree limb drop-off locations.

Additional resources and frequently asked questions about storm recovery

The tree limb drop-off site in Golden seems full--can I still drop off my fallen tree limbs there?

  • At this time, the tree limb drop-off site is still active and accepting tree limb waste from the storm. City of Golden crews are actively working to consolidate drop-offs now to make adequate room for more tree limbs. Please check the city website for any updates about tree limb site closure.

Will the City clear branches from my street?

  • The City of Golden will clear all streets and right of way. City crews will only dispose of branches from City parks or property; individual homeowners are responsible for disposing of any fallen branches from their trees.

Will the City pick up branches for me? What if I’m unable to get my branches to a drop-off site?

  • Individual homeowners are responsible for disposing of their own tree and yard debris.
  • If you are a resident of the City’s Pay as You Throw program, you can cut the branches in to smaller pieces to fit into your organic waste bin for regular pick up.
  • If you still need assistance with removing and disposing of branches from your property, please reach out to a local landscaping company for assistance.

Lifeguard Shortage May Impact Swimming Pool Schedules this Summer
Parks and Recreation agencies across the country have been battling a severe lifeguard shortage since reopening from the pandemic. The Golden Community Center is feeling the impacts of the national worker shortage as well.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we are excited that The Splash will open for the season on time this weekend. Unfortunately, the Golden Community Center pool will be closed due to a lack of available lifeguards.

Maintaining adequate lifeguard staffing levels to ensure a safe swimming experience may impact swim schedules throughout the summer. Plan ahead by checking www.splashingolden.com and rec.cityofgolden.net for current pool schedules before your visit.
Apply to join our team of lifeguards and help provide safe and fun swimming opportunities for your community this summer! The seasonal job is ideal for students and retirees alike! City of Golden lifeguards receive reimbursement of their training fees, competitive wages, and the opportunity to enjoy “Freezer Friday” ice cream days and fun staff events throughout the summer.
Openings Still Available for Youth Citizens' Police Academy!

The Youth Citizens' Police Academy is a program designed to provide teens between the ages of 13 and 17 with an inside look at law enforcement.

This week-long Academy seeks to increase understanding between young citizens and law enforcement through education and interaction with members of the Golden Police Department. The Academy gives young citizens the opportunity to learn why we “can” and why we “cannot” do certain things through a combination of hands-on training and classroom presentations. Teens will get hands-on experience in the areas of tasers, K-9 demonstrations, crime scene investigations, evidence collection, arrest control, firearms safety, and more.

The Youth Citizens' Police Academy will be held June 6-10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. this year. The registration deadline is this Sunday, May 29.

Administrative Offices Closed on Memorial Day
City of Golden administrative offices and the Golden Community Center will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

We wish you and your loved ones a happy, safe holiday as we pause to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military.

Phase 3 Xcel Helicopter & Crane Work (revised schedule)

Many in our community have seen or heard helicopters hovering over Golden a few times over the past month. The helicopter flights are assisting in an effort to replace overhead electric poles as part of Xcel’s wildfire mitigation plan.

The helicopters fly light to compensate for the weight of the poles, which means they must make multiple landings in a cleared landing site to refuel. More flights are planned in the coming weeks, along with large cranes brought into different areas of town, each operation bringing specific road closures and traffic control measures.

Here are the upcoming permitted crane and helicopter operations and necessary road closures planned as of now, updated from the original schedule due to the winter storm last week. Please be aware that flights are dependent on weather/wind conditions and are subject to change.

  • Wednesday, June 1: 7th Pl. between Ford St. and Boyd St. — One lane closure with flaggers on site.
  • Wednesday, June 1: Boyd St. between Clark St. and 7th Pl. — Full road closure.
  • Friday, June 3: Belvedere St. between 18th St. and 19th St. — Full road closure.
  • Thursday, June 2 & Tuesday, June 7: Peery Dr. — Full road closure for helicopter work.
