Planning Commission Hearing: Martin Marietta Materials

October 5, 6:30 p.m.

Martin Marietta Materials (MMM) is proposing to expand their current aggregate mining operation to the south, into Jefferson County, on land that is currently owned By Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS), just behind the hills north of the junction of I70 and US40. The Board of County Commissioners approved the expansion on September 27, 2022.

This would allow the overall life span of the mine to be extended, but the amount of material exported from the mine would not expand on a weekly or annual basis. As a result, there is no expected increase in the amount of truck traffic generated from the mining operation.

The mine’s operations involve land from multiple jurisdictions, including the City of Golden. Since the last Golden community meeting in January 2022, the Jefferson County Planning Commission reviewed the rezoning request and recommended approval to the Board of County Commissioners, which will make the final decision for the County. Golden’s Planning Commission will be reviewing the proposal to determine whether it meets the city’s criteria for rezoning and provide a recommendation to the City Council for the ultimate decision on the application.

The Planning Commission Invites you to join their next meeting Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at 911 10th St. to hear Martin Marietta Materials' proposal and come to a decision.

National Drive Electric Week

On September 13, the City of Golden City Council proclaimed September 23 – October 2 to be National Drive Electric Week. People all over can take a stand for climate by switching to cleaner transportation choices, like driving an electric car.

There are nine public electric vehicle charging stations with dual chargers which were funded through grants from the State’s ChargeAhead program. The City has recently adopted its first Municipal Fleet Electric Vehicle Master Plan and we are expecting our first two fully electric trucks to be delivered soon. In 2023, we plan to install another ten public charging stations through similar grant funding.

Golden History Museum’s Ethnography Study Available Online

The brand-new publication Indigenous Connections: Native American Ethnographic Study of Golden, Colorado and the Clear Creek Valley is an educational resource that can be downloaded for free from the Museum’s online collection website.

This report is the very first step in cultivating strong relationships with local Indigenous communities. We hope that this educational resource will be used widely and that other communities and cultural institutions will embrace and build upon this work for the greater understanding of the Indigenous presence in our region.

Together we can share resources, ideas, and networks to work collectively to lift Indigenous voices in our communities.

LAST CHANCE LED Streetlight Survey

The City of Golden Public Works Department is looking to you to help pick your favorite bulb as we level up all our city streetlights to LED bulbs. We launched a pilot study in August that will last through the end of September with lights located along 10th Street before it turns into 44th Avenue—the stretch of road near the Clear Creek Parking Lot and Coors. Each light pole is labeled with a letter A through E for easy identification, and marked on a corresponding map.

Why Upgrade to LED Bulbs?

Golden has traditionally used high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, which tend to have an amber hue. LEDs can vary in color temperature, typically from warm white to cool/bluish white. LED bulbs offer many benefits—they save energy, they save money, and they help improve visibility.

Help us Choose!

The City of Golden has carefully selected several LED streetlights for consideration in this study. The selected LEDs will mimic the warm glow of HPS lights more closely while retaining the visibility benefits of LED streetlights. We urge everyone to see the lights for themselves and help us select the best bulb for our city. Drive, walk, or bike along 10th Street on an evening in August or September, check out the new LED lights, note your preferences, then take our survey.

Fall Lawn Care

The two most important things to do to your lawn in the fall while it's still green are:

1. To aerate: Aeration improves your yard's ability to absorb water and nutrients. Before starting, make sure to mark your sprinkler heads so you avoid running over them and causing damage. Often, you can rent core aerators at home improvement stores to get the job done

2. To provide it with some nutrients: Adding nutrients to your lawn is another simple yet important task. While it’s advised to test your soil first, plant experts from Colorado State University generally recommend a fall application of fertilizer high in Nitrogen (e.g., 25-5-5) for cool-season grasses. Apply this type of fertilizer a few weeks before temperatures are supposed to

reach freezing. The main caution is to not add too much, which can result in damaging your grass and polluting local watersheds. Follow directions on the package, and your yard should benefit.

A Hot Deal to Cool You Down | Heat Pump Rebates

Now is an excellent time to take advantage of rebates for a new heat pump in your home. Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling and significantly reduce a home’s carbon emissions from heating. Xcel Energy just announced new bonus rebates up to $1,000, on top of existing rebates of $1,000 for qualifying heat pump systems. Golden will match up to $500, for a total of $2,500, making it a great time to save some cool cash.

Currently, the cost difference of installing a heat pump instead of a centrally ducted AC system is about $1,800. Highly efficient heat pump and mini-split systems will also save you energy and money over the next 18 years which is the average life of a system.
