GoldenGram - December 2021
Greetings Golden Lover!

Happy holidays! As the year winds down and we’re dealing with the Omicron variant of COVID, we thought you might enjoy seeing some pictures of our beloved Goldens. They always warm our hearts, and we hope they bring you some joy too. Here’s hoping for a 2022 that brings happiness to all!

For this version of the GoldenGram, we want to share a neat way to have fun with your Golden while getting them lots of exercise, remind you to get your dog an influenza vaccine, and show you some new items in our NGRR store. And of course, we have an adoption success story. We hope you enjoy these articles!
Adoption Update: Everyone Needs A Buddy!

--Thanks to Michelle Heeseman for sharing this story

Just wanted to provide an update on our sweet rescue Buddy - we adopted him from NGRR back in May 2016, and they thought he was about 8 or 9 years old at the time. As you can see, he was left alone quite a bit with his previous owners and he chewed/damaged the top of his paws.

Despite his age, he's still doing really well and we continue to love him dearly. He’s shown here with his late feline friend, Lola. Thank you for all that you do!
Immunizations reminder:
Influenza Outbreak!

We're hearing about a lot of cases of canine influenza in the Los Angeles area. Since our sweet pups can get very sick and even die from this disease, we suggest you consult with your vet to talk about influenza vaccines. Just like with humans, it's best to get your dog a flu shot each year. To be fully vaccinated against influenza, dogs should receive two initial vaccinations followed by a yearly booster. Click here for more information about how dog influenza is transmitted, symptoms to watch out for, and treatment.
How Many Goldens Does it Take to Make A Golden Palooza?

You may have heard of the 150th Anniversary of the breeding of the first Golden Retrievers in Scotland that led to a documentary movie of a meetup of 361 Goldens, but you don’t have to go to Scotland to see tons of Goldens. At this year’s Golden Palooza in Redding, there were 200 Goldens and their human companions! It was a beautiful Sunday and happy Goldens in every direction you looked. Mark your calendar now for the November 2022 Golden Palooza!
Have a Pandemic Puppy? Or a Dog with A Lot of Energy?
If you have a very energetic Golden and want to pursue some amazing sport activities, please keep reading about our volunteer Craig Simberg and his dogs Tom and Jerry (yes, really) who are Dock Divers. In our next GoldenGram, we'll feature Bob Armstrong and his dog Dayton who excels at Flyball.

North American Diving Dogs (NADD) is an organization that promotes the sport of dock diving for dogs throughout North America and Canada. Dogs of all ages and breeds can participate. NADD is affiliated with the AKC. Currently there are 3 disciplines available for a dog to compete in - Distance Jumps, Air Retrieve, and Hydro Dash. Craig and his dogs have been participating in NADD events for over 4 years. A friend of Craig’s from his Flyball club was participating in dock diving, and he decided to give it a try. Craig and his 2 dogs - Tom 9 1/2 years and Jerry 18 months - fell in love with the sport. Training for dock diving takes several months, and it helps that Goldens have a love for the water! The drive and confidence in the water helps the dogs to progress quickly. There are several different classifications of dogs for this sport, including one for Veterans who are 8 years and older. Tom shows no signs of slowing down!

Tom and Jerry also participate in other sports. Tom competes or has been involved in Obedience, Rally, and Flyball. Jerry is working on his Obedience and Rally. Craig’s favorite trip and memory from a competition was in Florida where Tom was entered in Obedience and Dock Diving at the same venue. They literally ran from one event to the other and loved every minute!

To learn more about Dock Diving, visit the NADD Website.

There are so many different dog sporting events to be involved in. Craig encourages everyone with a dog to find a sport their dog is interested in and go for it! The AKC website has many listed. Find a club in your area or go to an event and talk with people participating. The people you meet, the places you'll go, and the BOND you'll have with your dog is priceless!!!

Need a Gift for Anyone? Check Out Our NGRR SWAG

We have new goodies in the NGRR store – how about a warm sweatshirt, embroidered baseball hat, or insulated wine glasses? We also have bandanas, water bottles, tote bags, and more! And yes, you can buy a gift for yourself!

When you purchase an item at our Store, it helps us provide veterinary care to Goldens in need - all supporting our mission to find loving homes for our doggies!
Connect with NGRR on Social Media
There's apparently a lot to catch up on - like Oliver celebrating his first birthday! We’d love to connect with you on social media! Check us out on Facebook and Instagram (links below).
Vet and Shelter Outreach Efforts

NGRR is developing an outreach program focused on veterinarians and shelters so that they think of NGRR as a resource when they meet a Golden in need of extraordinary care or a new home. We will have a local volunteer as the primary contact, and they will periodically drop off calendars, snacks, and other items to increase awareness of NGRR. We’ve launched this program and would love to have additional local volunteers to be a part of the Vet/Shelter Outreach program. If you are interested, please contact Duane or fill out a volunteer application on our website. We would definitely appreciate your help!
Sochi (R), shown with her sister Bailey, would like to hear from you!
Talk to Us - Send Sochi A Note!

Sochi is on vacation right now, but she'd love to hear from you in the new year. Please send her a note if you have an idea for a 2022 meetup (e.g., at a park, the beach). Let us know what you’d like to do and where you would like to meet – we’d love to hear your ideas! Sochi would also enjoy seeing pictures and stories of NGRR dogs you've adopted! We look forward to hearing from you.

Look for our next GoldenGram in the new year. In the meantime, we’re sending our best wishes for healthy, safe, and happy holidays!
