Dear Gompers Families,

I hope you have all found time to enjoy the recent snowfall with your families.

Congratulations to Grant Haselow, our winner of the Spelling Bee.  Also, congratulations to all of our fourth and fifth grade participants who worked hard to participate in the spelling bee.

We have now entered the third quarter of the year and we are excited for all of the learning that will take place over the next few months.  If you have any questions on the learning your student is engaging in or would like more information on how to support them at home, please reach out to us as we are happy to support.

February 16, will be our Dress your best winter dance, silent auction and book fair.  Staff members have been preparing their outfits and we hope you and your family can join us.

February marks Black History month and we know that the diversity of our school community is one of our strengths.  We would love to have guest readers throughout this month.  Please let us know if you are interested.

Kindly,

Jackie Smith

NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

WHAT TO BRING TO SCHOOL?
We want to encourage all students to bring warm clothes each day. Students are welcome to store outerwear in their lockers during the cold months. We do have clothing supplies in the cafeteria for anyone who needs a warm pair of boots, snow pants, hats, etc... for the year.
ATTENDANCE REMINDER /FREE BUCKS TICKETS OPPORTUNITY
Hello Gomper's families. Being on time and at school every day is very important to your student's success. Kids who come to school on time, every day do better in school and feel more connected to their classmates and teachers. For every student at Gompers who has perfect attendance in the month of February, the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team will award them with a free ticket to a game and a free Wendy's kids meal at Wendy's! In addition, your student will be able to shoot a free throw on the court after the game. The school social worker, Jess Twitchell, will send out the complementary Bucks ticket offer to each student who achieves perfect attendance in February. Please contact her at 204-4558 if you have any questions."

Donating Items for Gift Baskets
At Winter Festival, the themed gift baskets are some of the most popular silent auction items. In the past, we have assigned a theme to each grade level, but this year, we are asking families to donate items for any theme that appeals to them. To see a list of basket ideas or sign up to donate items, go to (link). If you have any questions, please contact GEPTO President Amanda Kruse at amanda@gomperspto.org.

Sharing Information with You!
GEPTO shares information with families through flyers in backpack mail, Facebook (you can "Like" us at Gompers Elementary Parent Teacher Organization), and this email newsletter. We plan to send this newsletter twice a month. If you prefer not to receive these emails in the future, please send a message to Kelly Hauser, GEPTO Communications Coordinator, at kelly@gomperspto.org.
NEWS FROM THE NURSES' OFFICE
Have a Safe Healthy Winter!
This time of year often comes with cold weather and snow. These weather changes pose special risks, especially for children. Here are a few tips on keeping yourself  and your children healthy this winter!

-Take frequent breaks: When spending extended periods outside in the cold it is important to take breaks somewhere to warm up.
- Watch for frostbite: Watch for this when outside for extended periods of time or when temperatures are below -15. Frostbite is when a body part starts to freeze. It starts with the skin becoming red and tingly.
-Wash hands frequently: The winter season falls in the middle of flu season and hand washing is one of best ways to prevent yourself and others from getting sick.
For more information on how to be safe and healthy this winter please visit the Winter Safety Tips at HealthyChildren.org found here: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/news/Pages/Winter-Safety.aspx
