Dear Gompers Families,

Welcome back from our Winter Break!
I hope all of you had a wonderful time with family and friends.

As we move into 2018, we will soon be approaching the end of first semester, with report cards coming home for you to review your child(ren)'s progress.  Do not hesitate to be in touch with teachers if you have any questions.  We consider our report cards an important tool as we communicate with you regarding your students' progress.

Happy New Year!  Looking forward to working with all of you in 2018.

Kindly,

Jackie Smith

WHAT TO BRING TO SCHOOL?
We want to encourage all students to bring warm clothes each day. Students are welcome to store outerwear in their lockers during the cold months. We do have clothing supplies in the cafeteria for anyone who needs a warm pair of boots, snow pants, hats, etc... for the year.
MEET OUR NEW CROSS CATEGORICAL TEACHER, NATE WALZ

Thank you to everyone for a warm welcome into this wonderful school! My name is Nate Walz and I am the new Cross Categorical Teacher at Gompers. I have the privilege to work with students both in second and third grade this school year. I am extremely excited to work with such kind, hardworking, and respectful students. Some background about me, I was born and raised in Waukesha, WI. I attended school and graduated from Winona State University in Winona, MN. I am happy to be back in WI to start my career in a city as awesome as Madison. When I am not teaching you can find me playing or coaching any and all sports, going fishing, hiking, or riding my motorcycle. I absolutely love being outdoors, especially out on the water. Again, I am thrilled to start my new adventure at Gompers Elementary and I look forward to getting to know everyone better!

NEWS FROM THE NURSES' OFFICE
Have a Safe Healthy Winter!
This time of year often comes with cold weather and snow. These weather changes pose special risks, especially for children. Here are a few tips on keeping yourself  and your children healthy this winter!

-Take frequent breaks: When spending extended periods outside in the cold it is important to take breaks somewhere to warm up.
- Watch for frostbite: Watch for this when outside for extended periods of time or when temperatures are below -15. Frostbite is when a body part starts to freeze. It starts with the skin becoming red and tingly.
-Wash hands frequently: The winter season falls in the middle of flu season and hand washing is one of best ways to prevent yourself and others from getting sick.
For more information on how to be safe and healthy this winter please visit the Winter Safety Tips at HealthyChildren.org found here: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/news/Pages/Winter-Safety.aspx
