Dear #Positivity Friends,

Ponce de León may not have found the Fountain of Youth he was looking for when he led a Spanish expedition to “La Florida” in 1513, but he did discover something magical: Florida’s perfect weather.

They say he landed somewhere near St. Augustine in early April and spent several weeks sailing along the Atlantic coast, around the Florida Keys, and up the Gulf coast. Lucky for him, he happened on the brief but glorious period of cloudless days, warm temperatures, and low humidity that have turned Florida into the Spring Break capital of the world.

May is considered by many to be the sweetest of times to be a Floridian. The snowbirds and crowds of college-age revelers have gone home, so you have some peace and quiet until the summer vacationers arrive. You’re able to give the air conditioning a rest and drive around town with your arm slung out the car window, just like people in Maine or Minnesota do! And if you’re smart, you play hooky once or twice to go fishing.

Where I live in south Florida, the sunny days and calm seas of May are ideal for offshore fishing for mahi-mahi, tuna, and marlin. Inshore, the tarpon, redfish, and speckled trout are jumping. You might even do a little night fishing on Lake Ida to stalk the elusive clown knifefish. And whether you come home with a big haul or return emptyhanded, those few hours on the water are always just what the doctor ordered!

#Positivity® Stories

Stuffies

Adam Theroux from Warwick, Rhode Island is helping deliver smiles to children in California who lost their precious stuffed animals in the January wildfires. Theroux held a sewing session called “Stitching Smiles” for local volunteers to create one-of-a-kind stuffed animals, affectionately called “stuffies.” Armed with felt, buttons, thread, and stuffing, the toy makers created over 50 stuffed critters and cuddlies. He encouraged the participants to simply be creative and not worry about making something perfect. “Perfect is boring,” Theroux said. “It’s just fun to do something you didn’t think you had the skills to do.” The individually designed and hand-sewn creations were delivered to Soultenders, an Arcadia, California-based mental health care practice management firm that helped distribute the stuffed animals, providing much comfort to children in need.

Keeping an Eye on Baby

Parents who have premature babies are in a tough spot—they’re desperately worried about their child but it’s just not possible to be at the hospital with them all the time. In Philadelphia, the Superhero Project is doing something about that. The charity is installing AngelEye cameras in neonatal intensive care units throughout the city. The cameras allow families to tune in to a 24/7 live video feed of their baby through an app on their phones or laptops, as well as to receive updates and encouragement from the nursing staff. To the Walsh family, whose baby John was born prematurely at 32 weeks, the camera was a lifeline. “You’re always thinking about him,” John’s father Robert Walsh said. “You’re always wondering how he’s doing, how he’s progressing. It was extremely comforting because there was not a time that I didn’t have John right here on my phone.”

Helping Hands

In September 2024, flooding from Hurricane Helene devastated sections of North Carolina. The task of rebuilding has been daunting, but in the towns of Bat Cave and Chimney Rock, the hope of recovery shines brightly every day. Not long after the floods subsided, a group of volunteers from the Amish community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania showed up with their carpentry skills and donated materials to help rebuild the area. Day by day, the Amish men and women, as well as local contractors and volunteers, are bringing the towns back to life. Volunteer Amos Stoltzfus has been happy to be helping in any way possible. “It just fills my heart with joy, watching people get their life back again,” Stoltzfus said. “Somebody who was completely devastated through the storm … somebody who didn’t have anything … it is just so encouraging to see them get back on their feet.”
