Employee Spotlight
Brian Kendall
Mendon Pit Operator
Hometown:
I don't really have one...maybe Culpepper, Virginia. I've lived in a few places, including the U.K. with my aunt. She did the student exchange program and never came back.

Family:
My brother is down South.

Pets:
5-year-old Black Lab Pit named Boomer.

Pet Peeves:
Stupidity.

Favorite Food:
Probably American.

First Job:
Logging in Chester for Mike Massie.

Favorite Color:
Green.

Guilty Pleasure:
Beer, definitely. Bud Light.
Hobbies:
I've got a RZR Side-by-Side, and I like back country snowmobiling.

Something everyone should know about you:
I like to have fun...if you aren't having fun, messing with the guys you work with, then there's no point doing what you're doing. It's stressful enough as it is.

Who do you most look up to?
I'd say Kelly, he's a good leader, fair.

Best advice ever received:
You can go a long way with showing up every day and being positive.

Best part about your job:
Running the equipment. Casella Construction is also very good, they are willing to work with their employees, more than other companies.

Anything else you'd like to share?
Keep your head down and stay focused. It's a pretty rough time in America right now.

Safety Topic: Secure Your Load
If you are driving a vehicle (or towing a trailer) that is carrying a load, please be sure the load is properly restrained.
If a load is not properly restrained, it can cause:
  • Objects to fall from your vehicle onto other vehicles or pedestrains
  • Other drivers to swerve in order to dodge items that are falling from your vehicle
  • A shift in the load, causing your vehicle to become unstable or unsafe
Thank you for staying safe out on the roads!
The Silent Danger in Construction
Poor Mental Health
When thinking about safety in construction, risks to physical health often come to mind. However, more construction workers die from suicide each year than every other workplace-related fatality combined.

Workers in the construction industry are more vulnerable to burnout than in any other profession - often due to long and irregular hours spent in dangerous work environments. Working tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to support families and communities has only exacerbated the stress, burnout and mental health struggles.

Nearly 60% of construction workers reported struggling with mental health, but the majority never express their feelings or seek help.

It is important to speak to your supervisor if you are feeling stress regarding your work environment - and please be aware that your co-workers may be feeling the same. Be sure to take regular breaks, which are good for both your mental and physical health.
