This fall, Ave Maria School of Law welcomed the Class of 2029, a new generation of students beginning a demanding and deeply meaningful journey. They come from different communities, educational backgrounds and walks of life, but they share a desire to pursue the law with purpose. As they begin their studies, they join a community committed to academic and professional excellence and to forming lawyers who understand that the law is ultimately a vocation of service.

Our students are guided in their formation by an extraordinary faculty. This year, I am especially proud to welcome Ambassador Randy Evans to Ave Maria Law as a visiting professor of law. A former U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg, distinguished litigator and respected leader in public service, Ambassador Evans brings an exceptional depth of legal, governmental and international experience to our community. His decision to devote this chapter of his career to teaching Contracts and mentoring future lawyers is a tremendous gift to our students and to the law school.

We are also proud to welcome Professor Kathy Diener, director of the Veterans and Servicemembers Law Clinic; Professor Laura Seidl, director of the Immigration Law Clinic; Professor Marcia Nawrocki; and Professor Kristie A. Scott. Together, they bring significant experience in veterans advocacy, military service, immigration law, clinical legal education, legal writing, corporate counsel, business law and litigation. They join a faculty whose accessibility, professional experience and personal investment in our students remain among the defining strengths of an Ave Maria Law education.

We also have exceptional reason to celebrate the achievements of our graduates. Ave Maria Law earned an outstanding 89.8% first-time passage rate on the July 2026 Florida Bar Examination, ranking No. 1 among Florida’s private law schools and third among all law schools with Florida locations. Fifty-three of our 59 first-time examinees passed, nearly 15 percentage points above the statewide first-time passage rate of 75.2%. This remarkable achievement reflects the discipline and perseverance of our graduates, as well as the extraordinary commitment of our faculty and Academic Success and Bar Preparation team, who accompany our students from their first day of law school through the bar examination. We are immensely proud of them all.

This success is complemented by national recognition of Ave Maria Law’s improving employment outcomes. Together, these accomplishments affirm the strength of an education that combines rigorous legal preparation, individualized guidance and a clear sense of mission. Our graduates are leaving Ave Maria Law prepared not only to enter the legal profession, but also to serve their clients and communities with excellence, integrity and purpose.

The beginning of the academic year has already demonstrated the vitality of our community. Our students have engaged with leaders from the legal profession, government and public life; participated in conversations about faith, law and culture; and gathered in fellowship through the many organizations that enrich campus life. Beyond Naples, our faculty, students and alumni continue to extend Ave Maria Law’s influence nationally and internationally.

As we begin this new year together, I am grateful for our students, faculty, alumni, benefactors and friends who make the work of Ave Maria School of Law possible. The promise we see in the Class of 2029 is also a reminder of our responsibility: to prepare men and women who will enter the legal profession equipped with knowledge, integrity, courage and a commitment to the dignity of every human person.

Finally, never hesitate to contact me directly with any questions, concerns, observations or even just a simple greeting. My email address is jczar@avemarialaw.edu.

Meet the Class of 2029

The Class of 2029 brings together 151 students from 28 states and 90 undergraduate institutions, reflecting an impressive range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Just over half of the class comes from Florida, while students from Illinois, Texas, Michigan and Georgia are also strongly represented.

The class enters Ave Maria Law with a median LSAT score of 155 and a median undergraduate GPA of 3.48. Seventy percent of the students are Catholic, affirming the continued appeal of a legal education grounded in faith, reason and service. Students range in age from 19 to 52, with an average age of 25.

Ave Maria Law awarded more than $4 million in scholarships to over 80% of incoming 1L students, investing in a new generation preparing to pursue the law with professional excellence, moral clarity and a commitment to the common good.

Around Campus

From the Classroom to the Courtroom

Eight 2L and 3L students are representing clients in nine active matters through the Veterans and Servicemembers Law Clinic this fall. Their work spans veterans’ benefits appeals, military discharge upgrades, records corrections and civil litigation.

On Aug. 31, students advocated in state circuit court on behalf of a blind Army veteran in a case involving alleged contractor misconduct following Hurricane Ian. 3L and Certified Legal Intern Belinda Mozo presented arguments before Judge Michael T. McHugh of Florida’s 20th Judicial Circuit, while fellow 3L John Bozue assisted in preparing for the proceeding.

Students have also participated in hearings before Veterans Law Judges and a settlement conference involving a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. These experiences allow them to develop practical skills in client counseling, legal research, case strategy, drafting, hearing preparation and direct representation.

As the clinic’s new director, Professor Kathy Diener is guiding this important work forward, continuing Ave Maria Law’s commitment to serving veterans and servicemembers while preparing students to become skilled and compassionate advocates.

Ave Maria Law Ranks No. 1 Among Florida’s Private Law Schools in July Bar Passage

Ave Maria School of Law earned the highest first-time passage rate among Florida’s private law schools and ranked third among all law schools with Florida locations on the July 2026 Florida Bar Examination.

Fifty-three of Ave Maria Law’s 59 first-time examinees passed, achieving an outstanding 89.8% passage rate. The result placed Ave Maria Law well above the statewide first-time passage rate of 75.2%.

“We are tremendously proud of our graduates and the discipline, perseverance and commitment they demonstrated in preparing for the bar examination,” Dean and CEO John M. Czarnetzky said. “Their success also speaks to the extraordinary commitment of our faculty and Academic Success and Bar Preparation team, who accompany our students from their first day of law school through the bar examination. Seven Ave Maria Law Graduates Sworn In as Assistant State Attorneys

Seven Ave Maria School of Law graduates were sworn in together as assistant state attorneys for Florida’s 20th Judicial Circuit on Sept. 22, just days after learning they had passed the Florida Bar Examination.

The seven graduates represented all but one of the eight new prosecutors welcomed into the Office of the State Attorney. Victoria E. Micklavzina, Lili A. Rodriguez, Mary E. Purcell, Alejandro G. Ulbrich, Elena G. Stephenson, John P. Spencer and Cassidy J. Champlin took their oaths during a ceremony led by State Attorney Amira D. Fox.

The classmates reflected on the years of study, prayer and perseverance that brought them to the ceremony, as well as the responsibility they now carry as prosecutors serving the people of Southwest Florida.

Ave Maria Law Sponsors Catholic Bar Association Conference

Ave Maria School of Law was proud to sponsor the Catholic Bar Association’s 11th Annual Conference and General Assembly in Dallas. The gathering brought together Catholic attorneys, judges, scholars and Church leaders for professional formation, fellowship, shared prayer and the closing Red Mass.

We are especially proud of Joshua McCaig (’03), a member of Ave Maria Law’s inaugural class and the founding president of the Catholic Bar Association. The national organization grew from his desire to create a community where Catholic lawyers could strengthen one another in both their faith and their professional vocations.

McCaig’s leadership demonstrates how the formation received at Ave Maria Law continues to bear fruit throughout the legal profession.

Jackson Women’s Health Organization. He explored originalism, textualism and common good constitutionalism before an audience that included legal scholars, Church leaders, pro-life advocates, policymakers, members of the media and government officials. Students, faculty and staff climbed together in remembrance of the first responders who entered the World Trade Center towers as others fled to safety. Each step offered a solemn reminder of their courage, selflessness and extraordinary devotion to serving others.

The annual observance gave the law school community an opportunity to pause, reflect and ensure that the sacrifice of those who answered the call that day is never forgotten. We climb because they climbed. We remember because they served.

And The Answer Is...

Expanded Chapel Welcomes a Growing Community of Worship

Through the generosity of several donors, Ave Maria School of Law has expanded and enhanced its campus chapel, increasing its seating capacity from 30 to 75. The additional space is already being put to good use, with about 60 students, faculty and staff now attending Mass each weekday.

The renovated chapel features window decals depicting the Nativity and the Coronation of Mary, painted wooden statues of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph from Italy and a reproduction of Blessed Fra Angelico’s “Annunciation” above the tabernacle.

Father David Pignato explained that the image of the Annunciation recalls the moment in salvation history for which Ave Maria School of Law is named, when Mary’s fiat made possible the Incarnation and the redemption of the world.

“The expansion and enhanced beauty of the chapel have made it a true sanctuary where more souls can lift their hearts and minds to God and be reminded of the ultimate reason for everything we do here at Our Lady’s Law School,” Father Pignato said.

We are deeply grateful to the donors whose generosity made this beautiful and meaningful transformation possible.

Seven Graduates Sworn In as Assistant State Attorneys
