Dear ECO Family ,
Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians is all about strengthening a young church with the truth of Christ’s resurrection and its impact on our lives.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the final instruction for the
congregation that comes as a result of the resurrection.
There are certainly many instructions listed here that are applicable for us in the COVID-19 season as well, such as being at peace among ourselves, encouraging the faint hearted, and being patient with all. I think, however, one of the greatest encouragements is to pray without ceasing. COVID-19 is helping to illustrate for us our utter dependence on the Lord. We can express that dependence through prayer.

Last week I was on a call with all of the denominational leaders who are members of the National Association of Evangelicals. One of the decisions we made was to encourage our congregations and their members to join together for a day of fasting and prayer on Good Friday.  We thought that uniting together in prayer and fasting would be good for our own souls, allow us to see and recognize the hand and power of God, and be a sign of unity.

The link to the NAE’s website for the call to prayer and fasting can be found by clicking the button below.

As it turns out, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church in America, and the Anglican Mission in America were already working on resources to share with others. Therefore, if you or your congregation don’t have access to materials for prayer and fasting, I would encourage you visit the EPC webpage to be directed to their materials that they created in conjunction with the other two denominations.

I hope you will join me this week in taking some time on Friday to bow our knees before the cross of Christ and intercede on behalf of our world. Then, on Sunday, even though we will not be standing next to one another in corporate worship...
...we will proclaim boldly the truth that Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!
In Christ,
