October 2024

Happy October, everyone — and welcome to the latest edition of our monthly newsletter, Mission Matters!

First, I have to start out with a huge THANK YOU to all our volunteers, sponsors, golfers and everyone who donated to our Al Fitzmorris Celebrity Golf Classic yesterday. We had absolutely beautiful weather and everyone had a great time playing golf. But, more on that later in the newsletter.

Volunteer Spotlight

We have so many dedicated volunteers here at Medical Missions Foundation, their commitment to the people we serve is overwhelming. Each month, we want to focus on a volunteer that has continued to make an impact in bringing "Health for the World."

This month's Volunteer Spotlight is well-known in the Medical Missions Foundation community and has been with us for many years... Meredith Jackson.

How did you first learn about Medical Missions Foundation?

I learned about MMF from a Children's Mercy co-worker who had traveled with the group.

What got you involved for the first time?

I heard that Medical Missions Foundation was going to Romania and decided to go.

What missions have you been involved with?

I've been to Romania, Guatamala, Panama, Mali, India and Uganda with Medical Missions Foundation.

What is a most memorable experience during one of the missions?

My most memorable experience on one of the trips was when I helped "resuscitate" a sick man on an airplane floor above Saudi Arabia by starting an IV and infusing fluids. Even was asked by the crew if I thought we should land emergently for further care!

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer in order to continue using my nursing skills, often in less than ideal situations. It challenges me to be innovative, flexible and open to different methods of providing Healthcare. Also, I thrive on the appreciation I receive from those we help!

What advice would you give someone considering joining a mission?

I encourage other Healthcare providers to find a mission group and start by asking lots of questions so you have an idea of what to expect. It is helpful to go with a "veteran" who can help with acclimating to the differences they will encounter.

Any last thoughts or comments you want to add?

Volunteering on mission trips has enriched my life greatly! Besides being able to visit countries that I wouldn't have gone to otherwise, I have appreciated interacting with people of different cultures on a very basic level.

Warehouse Cleanup Day

Our Warehouse Cleanup Days are now held on the second Saturday of each month. Please join us next Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at our office (8363 Melrose Dr., Lenexa, KS 66214) for Warehouse Cleanup Day. We always have a lot of fun, so come by and pitch in!

Al Fitzmorris Celebrity Golf Classic

As I mentioned earlier, we are excited to have celebrated our 23rd Annual Golf Classic on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024! Royals Hall of Fame pitcher, Al Fitzmorris, fellow golf enthusiasts, and local sports celebrities had a great time out on the golf course, and we lucked out on the weather this year.
