FROM THE DESK OF

Executive Director, Dan Mauer

November, 2023

Happy November, everyone — and welcome to the November edition of our monthly email newsletter, Mission Matters!

Golf Tournament Recap!

Our 22nd Annual Al Fitzmorris Golf Classic on October 16th was a great success and a whole lot of fun!

Royals Hall of Fame pitcher Al Fitzmorris and fellow golf enthusiasts gathered for lunch, hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a beautiful day of golf!

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, everything went smoothly — from the welcoming table…

…to the check-in desk…

…and our incredible silent auction. (I don't want to rub it in, but you could have had a signed Mahomes jersey and/or a Chiefs helmet signed by Travis Kelce!)

And of course, it was a beautiful day for golf at Creekmoor Golf Course, one of the top-rated courses in the Midwest!

If you missed it, no worries — just be sure to join us next year! (Psst: We'll also have more items like the ones described above at next year's Art for the Children, see below.)

Thanks again to our amazing participants, donors, and volunteers who made the event possible!

Missions Recap!

We've had a busy year here at Medical Missions, with missions all over the world!

San Lucas…

…Antigua…

…The Philippines…

…and Uganda.

For more stories about this year's missions, be sure to check out our Mission Blogs from Guatemala, the Philippines, and Uganda. You can find them all here.

Thanks to our teams for all their great work!

Warehouse Cleanup Day Recap!

Warehouse Cleanup Day on October 21st was very productive (not to mention, FUN!)

Speaking of the warehouse, we're always in need of fresh supplies. Click here to see a list of needed items. Before donating supplies, contact Sulamita Ortiz, Missions Assistant, to make arrangements, or call 913-338-0343. Thank you!

Save the Date!

Art for the Children is our primary fundraiser, and it will be here before you know it! This special night will be filled with music, beverages and great food. And of course you'll find amazing art donated by many local, national and international artists!

We're also trying to line up volunteers, so if you'd like to help us organize things, please click here and send me an email. (By the way, if you happen to know an artist who you think would like to participate, please let me know!)

After Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday there is our favorite holiday... Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday is a special day where donors are encouraged to make a donation to the charities they support. Please be thinking of us and keep an eye out on social media and in your emailbox for more information!

Well, that about covers it for today. Look for a brand new issue of Mission Matters on the first Friday of every month!

In the meantime, our FacebookInstagram, and Twitter pages are active and a great place to catch all the very latest news and information about MMF — so stay tuned and be sure to check back regularly! And please feel free to contact me directly with questions, concerns, or to find out more about upcoming missions, events, and fundraisers.

I know we JUST finished celebrating Halloween, but since we only publish this newsletter once a month, here's to an early Happy Thanksgiving! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Meet Mark Shields, our Medical Missions Foundation Board President and long-time volunteer with MMF. Mark started his journey with MMF in 2001 when he was selected to go on a mission with a group from Cerner (now Oracle). Since then, Mark has traveled on twenty-one missions to Romania, Haiti, and Uganda. He says he keeps coming back because he loves being a part of the team. He isn't medical, but he is able to support and serve the others on the team and the patients that we help!

Mark shares that one of his most memorable experiences is when he spent a day with Brad Miller and Rynn Day escorting a patient who had a heart murmur. They traveled around Gulu, Uganda to aid the patient in getting the diagnostic tests he needed to help determine how the mission team could help. Medical Missions Foundation sponsored that patient's trip to Entebbe where he was able to get into a large hospital where he was diagnosed with a hole in his heart. It took almost a full year to have the patient diagnosed, but when he was finally seen by a cardiologist, it was determined that the hole had closed itself and the patient was no longer in need of surgery.

While he's not on a mission with MMF, Mark can be found spending time with friends and family, watching the K-State Wildcats and enjoying some Jack Stack BBQ. He also enjoys vacationing anywhere there is a beach or a place with historical significance. Mark would encourage anyone to get involved with Medical Missions Foundation by sharing, "I am so honored to be part of this great organization. I encourage everyone to volunteer in some way. There are many roles to fill on a mission and everyone can participate in some way."

We would love to highlight you on an upcoming volunteer spotlight. If you're willing to share your story, please email amandaecgray@gmail.com.
