Living With the Times; The Weekly Torah Portion

The Gold Standard

By Rabbi Eli Pink, emissary of the Rebbe to Leeds, England

The Mishkan (Tabernacle) was an impressive structure, constructed of acacia wood, gold, silver, copper and luxurious animal hides. The laws and discussion of the Mishkan's  construction span five Torah portions, and would, at first glance, seem irrelevant to us nowadays. The Mishkan ceased to be used almost 3000 years ago with the construction of the first Temple in Jerusalem, of what consequence all these laws?

Interwoven through the story of the Mishkan, however, are numerous ethical and moral lessons and practical advice that we continue to live by to this day. One of them pertains to the materials used in the construction project.

In the home of the generous chasid Ze'ev-Wolf from the city of Sanok in Galicia, there was great concern. A serious illness had befallen him, and his condition deteriorated day by day. Famous doctors from Krakow and Warsaw were summoned to his bedside. They gave him the best medicines, but nothing helped. His condition worsened.

In this difficult time, the public increased their prayers for him, especially those who had benefited from his generous giving. Ze'ev-Wolf himself prayed as much as he could. He asked that the many acts of charity he had performed would stand as merit for him.

Anticipating the Redemption

Thanks, But No Thanks

"And this is the Terumah which you should take from them: gold, silver, and brass". These three materials represent the 3 nations of Babylon, Media and Greece, which enslaved the Jewish people.

However, iron, which represents the nation of Edom (descending from Esau), was not mentioned. Why? To teach us that when Moshiach comes and all the nations will want to bring him gifts, G-d will tell Moshiach not to accept from Edom, since they destroyed the Holy Temple.

Moroccan Semolina Soup Recipe. Gluten-Free Friendly

In my native Morocco this semolina soup is often breakfast.

Semolina soup takes minutes from beginning to end and costs pennies, and it is so satisfying.

I have whipped it up countless times when I needed to round out a meal in a jiffy. You can save even more time by grinding the garlic and cilantro in a food processor. If you are making semolina soup for breakfast, the quick way, throw in the garlic and the cilantro whole. The garlic will be easy to fish out, or enjoy whole, in your bowl, and you can discard the cilantro at the end of cooking.

The Jewish Joke

Shmerel was just driving down the one way highway when his wife calls him: "Shmerel, be careful. I heard there was a maniac in a car driving the wrong way." "One person?" asks shmerel in astonishment, everyone is driving the wrong way."
