TRANSFORM YOUR POND WITH ENVIRONMENTAL FLOATING ISLANDS

Did you know?

A floating island can not only beautify your backyard pond but also improve water quality and create habitats for local wildlife. These innovative structures, known as environmental floating islands, are gaining popularity among residential homeowners and environmental enthusiasts for their numerous benefits.

What Are 'Environmental Floating Islands'?

Imagine a small, lush island floating gracefully on your pond, teeming with vibrant plants and wildlife. These man-made islands are designed to mimic the natural benefits of wetlands. They consist of a buoyant base, often made from eco-friendly, recycled materials, that supports various plants. These plants not only enhance the visual appeal of the water body but also play a critical role in improving water quality and providing habitats for wildlife.

Why Should You Have One?

1. Water Quality Improvement:

Floating islands act as natural water purifiers. The plants' roots extend into the water, absorbing excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. This helps prevent unsightly and harmful algal blooms, maintaining crystal-clear water. Imagine dipping your toes into a pristine pond, knowing your floating island is working tirelessly to keep it that way.

2. Aesthetic Appeal:

A floating island can transform an ordinary pond into a stunning focal point. The vibrant greenery and seasonal blooms create a beautiful, ever-changing display. Whether you're enjoying a peaceful morning coffee by the water or hosting a garden party, the serene beauty of a floating island adds a unique charm to your outdoor space.

3. Habitat Creation:

Floating islands provide a sanctuary for birds, fish, and insects, promoting biodiversity right in your backyard. They serve as breeding grounds and safe havens for various species. Picture dragonflies darting among the flowers and birds nesting in the lush vegetation, all thanks to your floating island.

How to Get Started:

Design and Installation:

Choosing the right spot for your floating island is crucial. It should receive adequate sunlight and be away from strong currents. Opt for native aquatic plants that are well-suited to your local environment and require minimal maintenance. Constructing the island involves creating a buoyant base that can support the plants and any additional wildlife that may inhabit it.

Maintenance:

Maintaining a floating island is relatively straightforward. Regularly check the health of your plants and remove any dead or diseased vegetation. Ensure the island remains securely anchored and monitor the water quality to see the positive effects.

Overcoming Challenges:

While floating islands offer many benefits, they do come with a few challenges:

Initial Cost: The upfront cost of materials and installation can be significant. However, the long-term benefits to water quality and ecosystem health often outweigh these initial expenses.

Maintenance: Regular upkeep is required to keep the plants healthy and the structure intact. Setting up a routine maintenance schedule can make this task manageable.

Climate Considerations: In this area, floating islands will need to be moved and/or protected during winter to prevent damage from ice.

Gardening Vertically:

There are many reasons for installing ‘upwardly mobile’ plants:

A) Space is an issue, so going vertically leaves room for other plants, a path, a patio etc.

B) To grow over something, such as a pergola for added shade or privacy.

C) To hide/disguise something unsightly.

D) To make more room in a small vegetable garden, training/vining tomatoes upwards, climbing red runner or pole beans, and vining squashes and cucumbers can go up on strong trellises or string.

E) Or just because the vines themselves are lovely and can be annual, perennial or woody.

Annuals Vines:

Spanish Flag or firecracker vine (Ipomoea lobata) seen here is a tropical vine grown from seed, blooms from midsummer to fall (can climb to 18 feet.)

Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus). This tropical vine is started from seed, with bright purple/pink flowers and their pods are ornamentally attractive adding a deep burgundy colour and texture, great for floral arrangements. Leaves are purple tinged green and it grows 6 to 20 feet. Black Eyed Suzie vine (great up trellises in planters), Cup and Saucer vine, sweet peas and morning glories make colourful annual vines also.

Perennial Vines:
