How Can We Help You Enhance The Beauty Outside?

POTATOES...

DID YOU KNOW...

There are over 4000 varieties of potatoes.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum), is the world’s most consumed vegetable.

On average, US residents consume 110 pounds of potatoes per year. Europeans consume twice that much!

A potato has more potassium than a banana!

August 13 is National Potato Day, don’t forget to celebrate!

Waterfalls, Ponds And Streams In The Landscape

Waterfalls, ponds and streams can add a dynamic and soothing element to the landscape, creating a sense of serenity and natural beauty. Whether you're planning a garden, designing a backyard, or just appreciating nature, incorporating water features like waterfalls and streams will enhance the overall aesthetics and increase your enjoyment!

Creating beautiful and functional streams, waterfalls and ponds is an art and a science. We've designed, engineered and installed dozens of streams, waterfalls and ponds for clients over the years. Based on our experience, here are 10 Points and Tips for planning and integrating waterfalls, ponds and streams into your landscape.

1. Natural Flow:

  - Mimic the natural flow of water. Consider the topography of the land to create a realistic stream path, with water gradually descending from higher to lower elevations.

2. Terrain and Elevation:

  - Utilize the existing terrain to determine the placement of waterfalls and streams. If your landscape has slopes, you can use them to create cascading water features.

3. Materials and Rocks:

  - Use natural materials like rocks and stones to create the streambed and waterfall structures. Boulders can be strategically placed to shape the water flow and add visual interest.

4. Plants and Vegetation:

  - Incorporate aquatic and stream-side plants to enhance the natural appearance of the water feature. Plants like water lilies, ferns, and moss will thrive in and around streams and ponds.

5. Water Circulation:

  - A recirculating pump system will maintain a constant flow of water. This not only conserves water but also ensures a steady and reliable stream, especially in areas with irregular rainfall.

6. Pond or Reservoir:

  - If space allows, you can create a small pond or reservoir at the bottom of the waterfall. This not only adds visual appeal but also provides a habitat for aquatic plants and wildlife.

7. Lighting:

  - Install lighting to highlight your water feature, especially if you want to enjoy it during the evening. Underwater lights or strategically placed spotlights will create a magical atmosphere.

8. Bridge or Pathways:

  - If your stream is wide enough, consider adding a bridge or stepping stones to allow for easy crossing. This will add an interactive element to your landscape.

9. Maintenance:

  - Plan for regular maintenance to keep the water feature clean and functioning properly. This may include removing debris, checking the pump, and monitoring water quality.

10. Environmental Considerations:

   - Be mindful of the environmental impact. Ensure that the water feature is designed to minimize erosion and runoff, and consider the local ecosystem when selecting plants and materials.

Whether you're creating a small backyard stream or a larger waterfall in a garden setting, careful planning and attention to detail will result in a stunning and harmonious landscape feature.

Landscape Design: Lawn History

In medieval times in Europe, the areas around castles and other strategic installations were kept clear of trees and shrubbery in order to better see who approached, friend or foe. These areas were considered ā€˜common’ grazing areas for livestock and often referred to as ā€˜the common’.

During the Renaissance, +- 1500’s, wealthy landowners started keeping vegetation short immediately around their houses, sometimes using sheep. They also paid local villagers to scythe it short and remove weeds and soon it became a symbol of wealth to have this fashionably short cropped area which they called a lawn. (From the Middle English word launde). These lawns were often planted with thyme or chamomile.

The settlers originally brought over lawn grass species to North America to feed their livestock. So this makes it one of the largest areas of planted exotic monoculture plants. In the USA alone 44 million acres are planted into lawns. (Doug Tallamy Nature’s Best Hope).

Lawns have remained popular in parks and homes, a place to play games, have a picnic, sunbathe, and friendly (most of the time!) competition with the neighbours, over who has the greenest, most weed-free lawn! The quintessential symbol of landscape tidiness!

MEET THE TEAM: ANDREW

This is my second season with Hill'N Dale Landscape Maintenance Team. We're committed to keeping our client's dream landscapes looking pristine. When I'm not at Hill'N Dale, I enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, and everything outdoors. The biggest fish I ever caught was a King Salmon which was almost 30lbs. The best tip for camping or being outdoors is to dress in layers, have lots of sunscreen, and don't forget the bug spray.
