A Devotional Thought by Lois Coady
I recently had the honor of officiating at the gravesides of a couple of our dear women who have passed of natural causes during this pandemic. While families were disappointed to not be able to have a traditional Celebration of Life at the church, they were blessed to have a nice graveside service to honor the memory of their loved one.
I remember the pastor who officiated my parent’s services telling us of his experience at the bedside of people in their final moments. If the individual did not know Christ, there was a fear in their eyes, he said, whereas a believer had peace in their eyes. I have only been at the bedside of my parents and sister-in-law in their final moments on earth, and can affirm the calmness and peace that surround children of God.
Grieving families tell a story too. When a family without faith loses a loved one, there is deep, deep sorrow and an overwhelming sense of their loved one being lost forever. They picture their loved one suspended in this space called “death” with no hope or future. On the other hand, while Christian families still mourn their loss deeply, there is a distinct peace and even joy because their loved one has moved on to heaven. This brings a completely different feeling before, during and after the service.
In Matthew 6:19-21 we read,
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy,
and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
When our faith is anchored in God, we know that our future, here on earth as well as into eternity is secure. Possessions do not matter as much anymore because we possess what money cannot buy. We possess the freedom to live as God ordained us to and die surrounded by His grace.
