A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT by Lois Coady
As I contemplate the New Year, I can’t help wonder what God has in store for us? Do you ever do that as a new year beckons? Look ahead in an effort to anticipate what God might have planned just around the corner? The truth is, I can never tell. My sight is so limited but His is expansive.
After years of trying, I’ve learned not to make resolutions or get caught up in goal setting for the year ahead because when things don’t work out as I imagined, I can become disappointed and really get down on myself.
I have also learned two other things:
- ONE, my resolutions and goals may or may not align with what God has for me
- TWO, what God has planned for me is far better than anything I could have imagined.
The Bible speaks about this in Proverbs 16:9, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” I don’t know if this comforts you as much as it does me but I hope it does. More than anything else, I want what God wants for me.
Instead of forecasting what I believe is ahead, I have learned to let the year unfold like a beautifully wrapped package. I just untie the bow on New Year’s Eve with a prayer of openness for the upcoming year and let God do the rest. When I do this, I know what I find will be perfect for me.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
According to my Study Bible about Proverbs 3:6, the “Hebrew word, yashar, literally means ‘to make smooth, straight, right’ and includes the idea of removing obstacles that are in the way. God will straighten the stressful paths. He does not say when or how; He just promises that He will.”
I have proven this true, God will make our paths straight as we trust Him. I plan to do that this new year and challenge you to do the same; let's embrace the new year of 2021 together.
