Renewing Your Mind: Part 6

It was gorgeous this morning and I went for a long bike ride. What a great way to multitask: getting exercise while meditating on scripture. Today my meditation was on Psalm 1, a truly golden nugget of scripture. Imagine you are high in the Sierras, panning for gold in the icy waters of the American River. You dig your pan into the soft soil just below the waterline, and as you bring it up and begin to swish it around, you see a stunning, beautiful gold nugget that could make you rich beyond your wildest dreams gleaming in your pan? That is what Psalm 1 is in scripture, a nugget that makes us rich beyond our wildest dreams. When we meditate on a passage such as this and then obey what it says, God begins to do a work in us that makes us more and more like His Son. And that makes us rich beyond our wildest dreams.

This is the value of scripture meditation. Interestingly, the word meditation means, “turning or revolving of a subject in the mind.” When we take a passage and turn it over and over in our minds, it begins to become a part of us. God’s Word is, in actuality, the Lord Jesus speaking to us when we read scripture. When we meditate on it, it is the Lord Jesus speaking to us in our minds. Our minds are now His mind. We are thinking like Him! This is what Philippians 2:5 says, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” And this is what renewing our minds is about, becoming more like our Savior as we grow to think like Him!

Notice the incredible promise from Psalm 1:3 for those who meditate on scripture: “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”

While I was riding today out west of Fiddyment along the old Philip Road, I saw a long line of trees in the distance to the north. I knew that it was the trees that line Pleasant Grove Creek. They were tall, green, and healthy-looking, all because they are planted by a flowing source of water. We can be like those trees; planted in the rivers of the living water of scripture!

When we are planted in the river of “living” water, the rich flow of God’s truth, we bring forth the fruit of the Spirit, we have the strength to overcome whatever the world throws our way and we grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! And that makes us rich beyond our wildest dream!

I encourage all of you to take up the discipline of scripture meditation daily. Just take one of your favorite verses and turn it over and over in your mind for a while. Then do it again and again and you will be richly blessed and the Lord Jesus will be very pleased!
