Joe Caples
Pastor to the New Communities
After a nationwide search that took a year and had us interviewing several excellent applicants from across the country, we are so excited to have Joe join our staff. Joe will be leading our ministry to the families living and moving into the West Park neighborhoods.

Joe and his wife Sarah are Sacramento area natives and most recently have served as the Sacramento Directors of Forge Ministries, a ministry of sharing the good news of Jesus on a grass roots, neighbor-to-neighbor level, and training other believers to do the same. When Joe and Sarah were interviewed by Pastor Scott, on a Sunday morning in January, about their work with Forge Ministries both the Search Team and the young families in our congregation said, “They are exactly the kind of people we are looking for.”

So, Pastors Scott and Phil started up a conversation with them, which led to a lot of praying on everyone’s part, more conversations, sharing vision, then interviews, all of which has led to the Leadership Team calling Joe to be our New Community Pastor and Joe accepting the call.

In the days, weeks and months to come, you will get to know Joe and Sarah better. Already you have heard him preach during our Higher series, and his commentary on the book of John has been published in our Spiritual Growth Saturday emails every Saturday and can also be found on our church website.

Joe has Master’s degrees in both theology and history. In addition to his work with Forge Ministries, he is an adjunct faculty member at Epic Bible College and former Young Adult Minister at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church. Joe is also a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy working in the law library at the Sacramento County jail.

At his request, Joe will continue his position as a sheriff’s deputy while serving with us as a "tentmaking" pastor just like Paul (Acts 18:1-4). There are benefits to this arrangement financially for both him and the church, but more importantly it helps him connect to his neighbors as a guy who has a “normal job” just like them.

Our goal is to start a vibrant ministry to young families who are moving in by the thousands. We don’t just want to reach Christian families, most of all we want to “seek and save those who are lost.”

Joe and Sarah and their three boys will begin house hunting in the West Park area. From there they will start doing grass roots, neighbor-to-neighbor outreach, starting home study groups, and recruiting and training like-minded believing neighbors to join them in making Christ known through the normal activities and conversations you would have with your neighbors. Already they have been having an online Bible study with our young families and some of their friends.

It may take a while before we see much evidence of their ministry within our church walls. Remember, we are now ministering in a post-Christian culture that probably has a lot of similarities to the pre-Christian culture that the churches of the New Testament ministered in.

PRAY that God will:
  • Continue to prepare and equip Joe and Sarah for this new ministry
  • Help them find and purchase the right home in the right location
  • Help their boys transition to new friends and a new school
  • Prepare the community to want to hear about and embrace Jesus

GIVE to the 20/20 Campaign (see the article below)
Our 20/20 Initiative When God Calls Campaign sought to share the vision and raise funds to expand and strengthen the ministry of our church. The campaign set a goal of raising $250,000 with a "miracle goal" of $300,000. However, you exceeded our wildest dreams and pledged to give $380,000 over two years above your normal giving to Pleasant Grove Community Church. In just over a year you have already contributed nearly $250,000!

NEW TO PGCC? You can still be involved.

CLICK HERE to download the information pamphlet on the campaign.

You can give by mailing a check with a note saying it is for the 20/20 campaign, or use our online giving and choose the "20/20 Campaign" in the drop down list describing the fund you want to give to. We ask that your gifts to the 20/20 campaign be above your normal giving to the church, otherwise you would hurt our current ministry to launch a new ministry.

Expand Core Ministries
We wanted to address two areas: Replace and upgrade our aging sound and video systems and find a transportation solution for church members who no longer could come to church on their own.

You already are beginning to see our investment in video improvements by being able to watch recordings of our worship services online. In addition, we have two companies preparing proposals for upgrading our now obsolete sound and video projection systems (some of our equipment is no longer working). The upgrades will result in better and clearer sound throughout the sanctuary and brighter video projection.

This upgrade will also further improve the quality of the video recording we have begun as well as make it possible to "live stream" our services so people can watch it live on Sunday mornings from their homes.

In regards to transportation, we researched several options and none were feasible. However, while we cannot transport people to church, we now will be able to bring church to them either on the internet or on DVD keeping everyone connected to our church family.

Reach New Community
The largest portion of the giving will go to this initiative. It has allowed us to hire Joe and cover his salary while he begins his outreach. It will also provide funds to support neighborhood outreach activities and events.

Increase Global Impact
Already we have been able to fund a two week evangelistic blitz in Albania through our missionary partners the Liberti family. This outreach resulted in encouraging local pastors and churches; raising their churches' profiles and good will in their communities; sharing the good news about Jesus in theaters, schools, jails and public squares; seeing many accept Christ and many more begin to participate in studies to explore Christianity. We will fund a second global mission project once our giving goes over $300,000.

for embracing this as a God-given vision
for our church and giving so generously to the vision!
We want to put together a video for Father's Day. So, men, please
send us a picture  of you wearing your favorite (or wildest):
SHIRT , or  HAT , or  TIE
We need your picture by Wednesday!
Let's keep remembering all our church family in prayer.
