Colleen Wilson '97 shares the importance of trying something new
Colleen Wilson '97, Community and Corporations Relations Manager at DICK'S Sporting Goods, Co-Director of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and new member of Westminster College's Alumni Council, shares her treasured memories during her time at Westminster, what she's accomplished since graduation, and the importance of trying new things. Read the recent Q&A and recognize what makes Westminster College so special through the people who grew here.
What was one of your most treasured memories during your time at Westminster?
There are so many good memories that I have from my time at Westminster from making lasting friendships to student government & sorority life and Volley Rock was so much fun! But, I would say one of my unique memories from Westminster was when I was asked to be part of the security team when Maya Angelou visited campus. I had a brief and wonderful interaction with Ms. Angelou that I will always remember.
What’s something you learned during your time at Westminster that still guides you to this day?
Try new things. Westminster provided opportunities for me to learn and grow in ways that were unexpected. The encouragement and support that I received from faculty and staff helped me to set me on a path to experience new things that I may not have tried on my own.

We recently dropped a new Something Real podcast episode with two Titans who are focused on being good neighbors!
Many of our students, faculty, staff and alumni thrive in an environment where we can be good neighbors. Fred Rogers once said, “All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we're giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That's one of the things that connects us as neighbors—in our own way, each one of us is a giver and a receiver.”
In this podcast episode, you’ll hear from Mike Disotell and Kelly Lake, both members of the class of 2011. Both are civic and community service-minded to their core and find it important to share why and how they fulfill their duties in their local, regional, and national neighborhoods.

Just a reminder! The CARES Act allows for up to $300 in qualified charitable contributions to qualify as an “above-the-line” deduction, meaning you don’t have to itemize deductions in order to claim the $300 as a deduction. Read for more details. This is a great year to consider supporting Mother Fair.

|
A Westminster biochemistry major, Jenna Toohey, spent the summer researching epigenetics and molecular carcinogenesis at the Virginia Harris Cockrell Cancer Research Center at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston.
The in-person internship allowed Toohey to work in a hands on learning environment much like she does at Westminster College and she called it "the experience of a lifetime."

Q: If you had to choose one word to describe your college experience, what would it be and why?
A: To describe my college experience in one word, it would have to be EVENTFUL. Throughout my years here, I have been through so much with changing my major, trying to fit all of my new major courses in, going through a pandemic and having to go home and do my classes. Everything has been unexpected but it has always been fun, so even though my experience has been eventful… I wouldn’t change it if I could.
