Thank you from Pastor Susan

Thank you to all the volunteers and staff who provided ministry while I was on vacation. It is a blessing to know the care our congregation provides is well supported. Your commitments allow me time to rest and renew.

In gratitude and grace,

Special Music this week by Abby Garrett

Abby Garrett is a native of central Illinois and has loved making music from a young age. Abby graduated with a BA in music performance from Illinois College in 2022, studying under Dr. Nichol DelGiorno, Stéphanie Myre, and Terri Benz. Since graduating, they have been involved in several ensembles in the area, including Springfield Choral Society, Bellacapella, and Spero. She also has been honored to serve the congregations of First Presbyterian Church, Grace Lutheran Church, and Temple B'rith Sholom in Springfield. When not singing, you can find Abby performing with the Carlinville Municipal Band, area school pep bands, or sitting enthusiastically in the audience at a local performance.

First Pres is hosting the Survival Revival training with the Kairos Center

The Illinois Times cover story this week shares perspectives of the team of ten Springfield organizers who attended a training in Texas last month at the Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Conference Center. You can read the story here.

The Survival Revival will be on July 18th.

Social Service Desk Continues to Serve

The First Presbyterian Social Service Desk is still actively helping people in need. In fact, the ministry never stopped. When our food pantry was closed due to COVID, the Social Service Desk continued to serve folks by email. Now that the renovations are complete the Social Service Desk is now able to serve neighbors face-to-face and that was re-started a couple months ago.

The Social Service Desk provides assistance in obtaining birth certificates, provides bus passes, and gas vouchers for those in need. With the challenges presented by the current economy we are encountering a growing number of folks in need. Gas prices nearing $5 have led to many more requests for the gas vouchers.

There are three ways you can help with the work of the social service desk:

(1) Denise Bockmier-Sommers is managing the Desk and could use a partner. If you are interested please contact Denise. We will provide training.

(2) We need greeters to welcome neighbors as they come for services. We offer these services every Saturday from 10-1:00. Please let Chaplain Tim know if you would like to pick a Saturday to help out.

(3) GIVE! The Social Service Desk is completely funded through the generosity of the First Presbyterian community. If you would like to give directly to this service you can designate a gift for Samaritan Ministries. There are envelopes in the pews if you want to drop a donation into the offering or go to LincolnsChurch.org/sharing.

Mental Health resources from the PCUSA

"Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary." Fred Rogers

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The PC(USA) has a variety of resources to support your mental health ministry. These are designed for individual use and by leadership in mental health ministry in an effort to expand mental health awareness and understanding, end stigma surrounding mental illnesses, and expand the capacity of ministers and congregants to engage in mental health ministry.

Access the resources here.

Micropantry Serves Our Neighbors

Please remember people often need water. Many people are being served through our micropantry. Thanks to everyone whose donations keep this vital ministry going. Any and all are welcome to donate food items. Simply place them in the cabinet.

Click here for a list of suggested food items.

Please note that our partners at Grace food pantry bring a number of items to our micropantry every Thursday.

Nursery

The nursery is available for parents to use with their little ones. You are free to use the nursery on Sunday mornings and during church events. Child care is not provided at this time so you will need to stay with your child while there.

Hospital Notices

Please note that the hospitals no longer contact local churches to let them know when a member is admitted. We encourage members and friends of First Presbyterian to call the church office to let us know when you go to the hospital so Pastor Susan and Chaplain Tim can provide pastoral support if it blesses you. We do not share any information without permission.

Coffee Fellowship

Thank you to all who have provided goodies and made coffee so that we can fellowship together after service.

We are always grateful for coffee fellowship hosts. If you would like to volunteer please email Michelle. If you are interested in hosting but don't want to do it by yourself please let Michelle know and we can find a partner for you.

Shelter Meal Volunteers

Jesus says: "For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited me in."

~Matthew 25:35

If it blesses you to help feed our neighbors, please join us on June 9th and/or 23rd. You can assist with the preparation of the meals, serving, visiting or all of the above. If you are interested or have questions, please see Linda Johnson, Keith Dhom, or Frank Schultz.

Different Ways to Give

Thank you to everyone that shares in the Joy of Generosity at First Presbyterian! There are several ways to support our ministries and many ministries to support. In order to ensure your gift is credited to the correct fund, please take a moment to include the following information when making a donation:

  1. Writing a check – Add the fund name in the memo section (Capital Campaign, Peacemaking, Samaritan Ministry, etc.)
  2. Online portal – Select “Other Donations” when entering the amount then enter the name of the fund in the Notes section
  3. Text giving – Text “$10 CC” to 217-284-2546, this example is a $10 donation for the Capitol Campaign fund. Other commonly used text codes are: Pledge, SM (Samaritan Ministries), Donate (Non-pledge), Peace, Joy, OGHS, Pentecost and BB (Brown Bag)
