In Loving Memory of Doug Slater

We give thanks for the life, faith, and friendship of long time church member, Doug Slater, who passed away on August 25th. We hold his wife, Cathy, and their family and friends in our prayers of compassion and loving kindness.

Heartland Housed Welcome Home Baskets

The Mission Committee and Faith and Fellowship want to thank everyone for the overwhelming success of the Welcome Home Baskets for the Heartland Housed initiative. Welcome Home Baskets are given to previously unhoused clients who are now being housed and in need of basic household items. From the generous donations you all gave, we successfully filled six baskets (one every other month) in 2025 and have now filled four baskets in 2026. The Mission Committee donates $100 to Heartland Housed for welcome baskets they put together on our off months. We are ready to collect items for a basket in September and need the following: knife set, cooking utensils, can opener, oven mitts, cleaning supplies, twin comforter, twin sheets, hand soap, shower gel, and shower curtain and plastic liner.

Because of space constraints, we do not have room to store things for future baskets and Heartland Housed only accepts complete basket donations. So please only donate what is requested. Don Ecklund will have a sheet in the Narthex after the worship service, where you can sign up for a September donation. We plan to continue to provide a basket every other month in 2026 and would like to collect the items listed above for the next basket by Sunday, September 6th. Thank you again for your generous response to this project.

Illinois Presbyterian Home

The Illinois Presbyterian Home will be hosting a puzzle contest on Sunday, September 13, 2026 at 2:00 pm in the Dining Room of IPH, 2005 W. Lawrence, Springfield, IL. The entry fee is $60 for a team of 4. The most recent winners were a team from 1st Presbyterian Church! Can they repeat the win? It will be good competition --get your team ready! If you would like to be on a team but don't have one please contact Michelle@LincolnsChurch.org.

Save the Date for the Springfield Crop Hunger Walk

Once again, Springfield Crop Hunger Walk will take place the first Sunday of October (October 4th) with the proceeds going to international and local food programs. Our Grace Food Pantry receives funds from this effort. The walk will begin at Third Presbyterian Church, 1030 N 7th Street, with registration at 1:00 pm and the walk starting at 1:30. You can support this effort by taking a walker envelope and soliciting donations, whether you actually walk the two miles or not. Those who raise funds will receive a beautiful free t-shirt. You can also support the walk by donating through a church member who is soliciting funds. Our church Mission Committee will make it's annual $1,000 donation to this worthy cause as well. Don Ecklund will be handing out walker donation envelopes for those willing to seek donations from others. Thanks to all for your generous support.

Thanks to everyone whose donations keep this vital ministry going. Any and all are welcome to donate food items. Simply place them in the cabinet. Please note that our partners at Grace Food Pantry bring a number of items to our micropantry every Thursday. 

Many people are being served through our micropantry and during the summer months they often need water. Please avoid placing glass containers in the cabinet.

Nursery is Available

The nursery is available for parents to use with their little ones. You are free to use the nursery on Sunday mornings and during church events. Child care is not provided at this time so you will need to stay with your child while there.

Please note that the hospitals no longer contact local churches to let them know when a member is admitted. We encourage members and friends of First Presbyterian to call the church office to let us know when you go to the hospital so Pastor Susan and Chaplain Tim can provide pastoral support if it blesses you. We do not share any information without permission.

Shelter Meal Volunteers

Different Ways to Give

Thank you to everyone that shares in the Joy of Generosity at First Presbyterian! There are several ways to support our ministries and many ministries to support. In order to ensure your gift is credited to the correct fund, please take a moment to include the following information when making a donation:

1. Writing a check – Add the fund name in the memo section (Capital Campaign, Peacemaking, Samaritan Ministry, etc.)
2. Online portal – Select “Other Donations” when entering the amount then enter the name of the fund in the Notes section
3. Text giving – Text “$10 CC” to 217-284-2546, this example is a $10 donation for the Capitol Campaign fund. Other commonly used text codes are: Pledge, SM (Samaritan Ministries), Donate (Non-pledge), Peace, Joy, OGHS, Pentecost and BB (Brown Bag)
